Player Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldRyan Howard homered for the third straight game and the Phillies beat the Diamondbacks 6-5 in the 12th inning on Friday.
Shane Victorino finished the game 3-for-6 with two RBI and Jayson Werth drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning. Howard finished 2-for-5 with a solo shot and two runs scored. The homer was his 28th of the season and he has now knocked four home runs in the past three days. Maybe he's angry about not being named to the NL All-Star team, or possibly he's gearing up for a big second half. Either way, he's making fantasy owners very happy.
Roy Halladay threw his tenth career shutout to defeat the Yankees on Friday night.
Halladay was dominant: he allowed just two hits and struck out nine in the performance. He's always pitched well against the Yankees, and tonight was no exception. Tonight was his third consecutive win, and he's now allowed just two runs in his last 25 innings, bringing his ERA down to 2.71 on the season.
Kelvim Escobar will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery to repair a torn right labrum.
Escobar and the Angels tried to put off surgery for as long as possible in the hopes that he could come back to pitch without going under the knife, but now he'll likely miss most of next season as well. Escobar is expected to be sidelined for 9-12 months.
Making his first start since June 30, Roy Oswalt left Friday's game after one inning with a left hip abductor strain.
Oswalt threw a scoreless first inning on 17 pitches, but the Astros pinch-hit for his spot in the lineup in the second inning. He was questionable to make his start after receiving a cortisone injection in his injured hip Saturday, so he may be headed for the disabled list.
The Blue Jays' official website reports that Dustin McGowan will likely avoid surgery on his ailing right shoulder.
It's huge news for the 26-year-old, as team doctors determined that McGowan's shoulder hasn't suffered any additional damage compared to an MRI performed late last season. He is expected to get a second opinion next week, but for now it seems like he's only dealing with inflammation in the arm.
The Reds official website reports that Aaron Harang (arm) will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained forearm.
An MRI came back negative, and Harang has been diagnosed with a forearm strain. Reds GM Walt Jocketty said that he expects him to be ready to return after the two-week stint on the disabled list. In the meantime, Homer Bailey will be called up to replace Harang in his scheduled start on Sunday in Milwaukee.

The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.
