THT Daily: Hargrove and Narronby Matthew CarruthJuly 02, 2007 Major League News for July 2LinksPlayer News Yesterday’s Results Today’s Games Standings Game of the Day Top Minor League Performances Stats You can always find the most recent THT Daily at http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/content/thtdaily/ LinksPost-Managerial Future - Ken Rosenthal offers up his take on the Mariners and Reds in the wake of the managerial changes. Jose Capellan a Tiger - The Tigers acquired RP Jose Capellan from the Brewers for a minor league pitching prospect. Capellan had requested a trade earlier in the season. Young Pitchers - An excellent article about young pitchers and the extreme amount of throwing they endure going through youth baseball. Walkout, sort of - Buc's Dugout has a recap on the proposed, planned and somewhat pulled off walkout in protest of the team's ownership. Daily Mark Buehrle Watch - Yay. I hadn't talked about Mark Buehrle in forever. Latest news is that with a deal all but in place, White Sox GM Kenny Williams is refusing to put in a no-trade clause, a move that may sink the deal and put Buehrle back onto the trade market. Player NewsPlayer news items are provided by RotoworldReds fired manager Jerry Narron. Former Pirates interim manager Pete Mackanin is expected to be named his interim replacement. It really was past time for Narron to go. The players and media seemed to like him, but his bullpen management was a real problem and he wasn't always good about putting his best lineup on the field. The move would seem to come too late to do much good for 2007, but the Reds still needed to move on. Padres placed outfielder Milton Bradley on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 21, with a strained oblique. Bradley wasn't in condition to play after reporting Sunday. "He swung very good from the right side. Left-handed, he's a little tentative," GM Kevin Towers said. "We fully expected this." The plan is for Bradley to return right after the All-Star break. Jose Cruz Jr. will continue to play regularly in the meantime. Mariners manager Mike Hargrove resigned Sunday and was replaced by bench coach John McLaren. Bizarre. After all of this time on the hot seat, Hargrove finally had some job security after the Mariners' strong first half. The 57-year-old Hargrove said he was stepping aside because his "passion has begun to fade" and it would not be "fair to myself or the team" to continue. Hargrove will manage today's game and then be replaced by McLaren on Monday. Blue Jays placed RHP A.J. Burnett on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 29, with a right shoulder injury. Could the Blue Jays handle injured pitchers any worse? Burnett threw 130 pitches, went on the DL with a sore shoulder after his next start, was rushed back after missing just two turns and is now right back out again. He might have to be written off for the rest of the year at some point. Jesse Litsch is likely to replace him in the rotation. Tigers acquired RHP Jose Capellan from the Brewers for LHP Chris Cody. Capellan had a 4.50 ERA in 12 innings since rejoining the Brewers on June 1. Milwaukee had been looking to move him ever since he requested a trade when he failed to make the team out of spring training. With unexceptional command of his big fastball and still no plus second pitch, Capellan no longer projects as a long-term closer. However, he should prove to be at least a minor upgrade for Detroit's pen.
