Jake Peavy became the NL's first 19-game winner by allowing two runs over seven innings Wednesday against the Giants. Peavy wasn't at his best tonight, as he struck out just one batter. Still, he was good enough. With an 8-2 lead after five, it was a surprise the Padres didn't pull Peavy after five or six innings, since they might need him to start on three days' rest Sunday. San Diego is one game behind Arizona in the NL West and one game ahead of Philadelphia and Colorado in the wild card. If Peavy isn't needed Sunday, he'll end up 19-6 with a 2.36 ERA and a career-high 234 strikeouts. He'll be the NL leader in wins and strikeouts and the major league leader in ERA and WHIP.

Barry Bonds went 0-for-3 before coming out of the game Wednesday in what was believed to be his final appearance for the Giants. Bonds grounded out in his first two at-bats against Jake Peavy. In the sixth, with everyone apparently realizing it'd be Bonds' final at-bat, Peavy fell behind 2-0 and then grooved him one. Bonds just missed it, flying out to the warning track in right-center. That earned Peavy a hug on the inning-ending play, and Bonds got a standing ovation as he came off the field. He's not expected to see any time in the series against the Dodgers this weekend.

Robinson Cano finished 2-for-5 with a three-run homer and five RBI as the Yankees' destroyed the Rays on Wednesday to clinch a spot in the postseason. The Bombers remain three games back in the AL East with four to play, so it's probably time to start resting regulars and getting prepared for the postseason. Therefore, expect Bobby Abreu, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez to get at least one day off this week. Abreu's is likely to come Thursday against Scott Kazmir, and Cano might sit then, too. Cano's five-RBI game tonight got him to 94 for the year. 54 of those have come in 72 games since the break.

MLB suspended umpire Mike Winters for the rest of the season for his conduct during Sunday's game against the Padres. No suspension at all for Bradley, though one could say he already received his punishment. For MLB to come down like this, Winters must have said some pretty nasty things. We hope that if the remarks were truly racist, Bud Selig and company would be sure to get rid of him in the offseason.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.

Game of the Day
The Rockies are on a September roll, winning their club-record tenth game in a row behind Josh Fogg’s 6.2 shutout innings. The Rockies are now just one game behind the wildcard leader and two behind division-leading Arizona, whom they play in a three-game series this weekend. Little-known fact: Matt Holliday currently leads the majors in total bases (374).
