THT Daily: He’s backby Dave StudemanMay 13, 2009 Major League News for May 13Player News Yesterday’s Results Today’s Games Standings Top Minor League Performances You can always find the most recent THT Daily at http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/content/thtdaily/ Player NewsPlayer Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldErvin Santana is scheduled to start Thursday against the Red Sox. Santana has been out all season with a sprained elbow ligament. He's probably already been scooped up in most leagues, but it wouldn't hurt to take a look. The Angels are also getting John Lackey back from the disabled list this weekend. That's quite the early season boost. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Ryan Ludwick is "probably" headed for the disabled list after suffering a hamstring injury Tuesday night. "Barry (head athletic trainer Barry Weinberg) says there's a real sore spot there," admitted manager Tony La Russa, "so I wouldn't anticipate the news being too good." The Cardinals may have to get creative if Ludwick does indeed hit the DL. They could move Skip Schumaker back to the outfield and call up Brendan Ryan to cover second base. Or perhaps they'll trust Joe Mather, who's struggling at Triple-A, to step it up. Red Sox placed first baseman Kevin Youkilis on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 5, with an oblique injury. Jeff Bailey will handle stating duties at first base while Youk is out. He's eligible to return in a little over a week and may do just that. It was silly to have him active and riding the pine when he clearly wasn't going to be ready for several more days. Zach Duke held the Cardinals to four hits and one earned run over eight solid innings Tuesday as the Bucs snapped an eight-game skid. Duke handled the Cardinals' lineup with relative ease, fanning five batters and issuing just one walk in the 7-1 victory. He improved to 4-3 on the season and dipped his ERA down to 2.52. Mixed leaguers with serious earned run problems may want to think about giving him a shot. Chien-Ming Wang tossed six shutout innings in his first rehab start Tuesday at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Yankees GM Brian Cashman was in attendance and now must make the decision whether to recall Wang or have him throw another rehab game. He said Monday that he didn't anticipate Wang being "ready after one outing." Royals GM Dayton Moore reported Tuesday that Joakim Soria has no structural damage in his right shoulder. Soria was forced to the disabled list Monday after spending a few days on the bench with shoulder soreness. "We're sure there's nothing structurally wrong. Basically, what he has is tendonitis of the rotator cuff," Moore said. Soria should be able to return in about two weeks. Diamondbacks activated SS Stephen Drew from the 15-day disabled list. Drew had been on the disabled list since April 25 with a hamstring injury and returned a day later than expected. He was hitting .205/.280/.386 in 44 at-bats before he was sidelined. Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi said Tuesday that B.J. Ryan won't immediately re-inherit the closer's role once he returns from the disabled list. The Blue Jays, who are off to an incredible start and sit atop the American League standings, will continue to use Scott Downs in the ninth inning. "I think B.J. understands that at this point," Ricciardi said. "One thing about B.J. that you respect is the fact that he wants to win. I think right now with Downs doing such a good job and the club being comfortable in that role I don't think it's a role right now that's open. Ultimately I think B.J. will get back to being a closer at some point but I think right now Downs has got the role. Tough to argue with the club playing so well." Ryan is expected to return by week's end and will operate in a setup role. He had an 11.12 ERA in six games before he was sidelined.
