THT Daily: Hurdle’s outby Dave StudemanMay 30, 2009 Major League News for May 30Player News Yesterday’s Results Today’s Games Standings Top Minor League Performances You can always find the most recent THT Daily at http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/content/thtdaily/ Player NewsPlayer Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldAstros placed second baseman Kaz Matsui on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 26, with a strained left hamstring. Edwin Maysonet, who had a nice game filling in tonight, will likely start at second base again on Saturday. He's a pretty weak replacement, but maybe he's getting hot at the right time. Andy Pettitte left Friday's game against the Indians in the sixth inning with an unknown lower body injury. The Yankees haven't announced any details about the injury. Consider him day-to-day until more information becomes available. Brett Myers will have surgery on his right hip and will likely be done for the season, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Myers told the paper that surgery hasn't been scheduled yet, but next Thursday is a possibility. The surgery will repair a torn labrum and bone spurs in his right hip. This is a huge blow. The Phillies may look to trade for a starting pitcher now that Myers is almost guaranteed to be done for the year. The Rockies have reportedly fired manager Clint Hurdle and replaced him with bench coach Jim Tracy. From bad to worse. Hurdle never seemed like much of a tactician, and it sounded like the players were prepared for a change. Tracy, though, was a brutal manager in Pittsburgh and hardly seems worthy of another opportunity. The Rockies should look outside of the organization for a long-term replacement. White Sox placed OF Carlos Quentin on the 15-day disabled list with plantar fasciitis in his left foot. Chicago is acting conservatively with Quentin, hoping to get him healthy for the rest of the season. Considering his .229/.325/.458 start, that makes a lot of sense. Quentin has been dealing with the pain all year, and it shows. He's well off of his 2008 pace. Scott Podsednik has been getting most of the time in left with Quentin out, though considering he hasn't posted a .700 OPS since 2005, saying he's replacing Quentin is a stretch. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.
