Hudson is optimistic that he can play through the torn ligament, but the Diamondbacks fear that he might require season-ending surgery. Most likely, he'll return to the lineup next week and see if he can deal with it. There shouldn't be anything he can do to make the problem worse, and even if he undergoes surgery to October or November, he should still be ready for spring training. Nomar Garciaparra, who came off the DL on Tuesday after missing three weeks with a strained calf, is starting at third base on Friday night. This is a whole lot sooner than expected. Playing Garciaparra at less that 100 percent might make sense if he still ranked among the league's better hitters. However, he has a 688 OPS this year and he's a liability on defense even when healthy. We just don't see why the Dodgers feel the need to go this route, especially when they're 4-0 with Andy LaRoche in the lineup since he was recalled. Troy Glaus received multiple shipments of steroids in 2003 and 2004 through an allegedly illegal internet distribution network, according to information obtained by SI. A source in Florida with knowledge of the client list of Signature Pharmacy, an Orlando-based compound pharmacy, alleges that between September 2003 and May 2004, multiple shipments of nandrolone and testosterone were sent to Glaus at a Corona, Calif., address that traces to the player. Both nandrolone and testosterone were on MLB's banned list at the time, though there was no designated punishment for using either. Glaus was dealing with major shoulder problems while with the Angels in 2003 and 2004 and may have only been cheating then in an attempt to rehab. Still, there's no reason to give him the benefit of the doubt. Pirates fired GM Dave Littlefield. That Littlefield lasted more than six years in his role despite such an awful track record is just another black mark against the organization. Littlefield did make some fine trades -- Jason Bay and Oliver Perez for Brian Giles will go down as his crowning achievement -- but the Pirates were terrible in both free agency and the draft under his command. Also, their roster management has been as poor as anyone's. The Pirates desperately need to start over, and that probably means letting Jim Tracy go, too. Director of player development Brian Graham will take over as the interim GM, but he shouldn't have a chance at the permanent job.
