THT Daily: Kickoffby Matthew CarruthSeptember 07, 2008 Major League News for September 7Player News Yesterday’s Results Today’s Games Standings Top Minor League Performances You can always find the most recent THT Daily at http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/content/thtdaily/ Player NewsPlayer Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldJeff Clement will undergo season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, the Mariners announced after Saturday's game. That explains why he wasn't playing against Sidney Ponson on Saturday. Clement was hitting quite a bit better of late, but he was still at .227/.295/.360 in 203 at-bats for the year. He'll be one of the Mariners' question marks heading into 2009. The team could commit to him at catcher or move him to first base and play him regularly there. It's also possible that he could be sent back to Triple-A for additional seasoning, with Kenji Johjima remaining the regular catcher. Rob Johnson could have some fantasy value over the rest of this month with Clement down. He and Johjima figure to share time. Astros manager Cecil Cooper indicated that Ty Wigginton would likely miss at least 7-10 days with a groin strain suffered Saturday. A tough break for Ty, who had been one of the NL's hottest hitters over the last five weeks. The Astros will go with Darin Erstad in left and Michael Bourn in center for now. Geoff Blum will keep playing third. Alfonso Soriano had his third career three-homer game Saturday as the Cubs beat the Reds 14-9. Soriano flied out in the first and then homered in his next three at-bats. The Cubs later got homers from Mark DeRosa and Jason Marquis to make it an 11-1 game. Soriano singled in his fifth at-bat and could have gotten one more try at a fourth homer in the ninth. However, he was replaced on defense in the bottom of the eighth. The Reds actually threatened to make a game of it by getting four runs in the eighth and four more in the ninth. However, Carlos Marmol was able to shut the team down after giving up a grand slam to Jolbert Cabrera. Roy Oswalt tossed a one-hitter Saturday to beat the Rockies at Coors Field. While Matt Holliday and Brad Hawpe, who had the lone hit tonight, are generally getting the job done, the Rockies as a whole just aren't hitting right-handers. Oswalt, who has had quite a bit more trouble against lefties this season, was able to run right though the lineup 3 1/2 times tonight, throwing 102 pitches in the process. He's allowed only one run over 24 1/3 innings in his last three starts. Ben Sheets, who left his last start with groin tightness, felt well enough to throw a complete-game shutout against the Padres on Saturday. Another hard-luck outing for Jake Peavy, who was on the wrong side of a 1-0 game today after having a 1-0 lead blown by the pen in his previous start. The Brewers got their run tonight when Prince Fielder doubled in Ryan Braun in the third. After that, it was all Sheets. He allowed five hits, walked one and struck out seven in a 120-pitch gem.
