Player Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldNick Hundley delivered a walkoff homer in the 16th inning Saturday to give the Padres a 6-5 win over the Reds.
The homer off a weary Micah Owings was his second of the year. It was the first run either team had scored since the eighth. The Padres rallied for one run in the seventh and two in the eighth to tie the game at 5, and their bullpen pitched 10 1/3 scoreless innings after Josh Geer was removed. The win went to Luis Perdomo, who threw three scoreless innings.
Jason Bay hammered his 11th home run of the season, a two-run shot, as the Red Sox defeated the Mariners 5-3 on Saturday night.
Bay teed off in the top of the first inning, scoring J.D. Drew. Jason Varitek added another two-run dinger in the second inning and the Mariners couldn't muster a large enough rally. Bay is batting .305 this season with 40 RBI in 128 at-bats.
Kevin Youkilis (oblique) is scheduled to play in two rehab games with Triple-A Pawtucket early next week.
Youkilis is eligible to return from the disabled list on May 20, and should be able to do just that. "He'll have a lot to say about how he feels. This is a situation where he wants to go and get some at-bats," manager Terry Francona said. "He's obviously smart enough to know they're good for him -- so he'll know when he feels the best at the plate."
According to MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince, the Indians will remove Masa Kobayashi from their 40-man roster on Sunday.
The Indians need to clear roster space for Sunday's starter, David Huff. Kobayashi can either accept an assignment to Triple-A Columbus or opt for free agency. The way things have gone in Cleveland, we wouldn't be surprised to see him leave town. The 34-year-old had an 8.38 ERA and 1.66 WHIP in 9 2/3 innings this season.
Mike Aviles admitted Saturday that he's been dealing with a sore right forearm for much of the year.
That could explain his .194 batting average. "It got to that point," Aviles acknowledged, "where I had to say something. It bothers me hitting on certain pitches. I just haven't been able to do some of the things that I normally do. It's a little restricting." Look for him to get a few days off in the month of May.
Rangers placed pitcher Frank Francisco on the 15-day disabled list with biceps tendinitis.
He was placed on the disabled list retroactive to May 7, meaning he could return next Friday. The Rangers are simply being cautious. Warner Madrigal will take his place on the roster.
Alex Rodriguez hit a walk-off eleventh inning home run in a 6-4 win over the Twins on Saturday.
The two-run shot off Craig Breslow was set up by a walk to Mark Teixeira. It's the first home run at the new Yankee Stadium for A-Rod and just his fourth hit since coming off the disabled list.
