Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said Ramirez is likely to start Tuesday. He was named the NL's starting shortstop for the All-Star game over the weekend and is enjoying another fine season. In 298 at-bats, Hanley is hitting .346/.409/.574 with 14 dingers, 60 RBI and 12 stolen bases. Jarrod Washburn spun a one-hit shutout as the Mariners beat the Orioles 5-0 on Monday night. Washburn faced just one over the minimum in the gem, with Nick Markakis' fourth-inning single registering as the only damage. He threw 75 of his 110 pitches for strikes and fanned three. Washburn is having a fantastic season and now holds a 3.09 ERA and .230 opponents' batting average, though lousy run support has translated that fine work into a 5-6 record. An MRI on Kevin Slowey's wrist revealed no structural damage. That is good news for the Twins, as the official diagnosis remains a strained right wrist. He'll rest his wrist for a few days before beginning a rehab program. Giants placed LHP Randy Johnson on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left shoulder. This sounds like an injury that could keep the Big Unit shelved for more than 15 days, but manager Bruce Bochy believes it isn't that serious and that he could return at the 15-day mark. Jonathan Sanchez will return to the rotation to replace Johnson in the interim. The Tigers will skip Rick Porcello's next turn in the rotation. This means that Porcello will not start again until after the All-Star break. The Tigers are off on Thursday and the All-Star break is next week, so the thinking goes that this will help to limit the youngster's workload heading into the second half of the season. He has thrown 87 innins so far. "We always said all along we were going to pick our spots to protect him," manager Jim Leyland said. "It has nothing to do with yesterday's performance, I can tell you that. ... To be honest with you, I'm sure he doesn't like it, but it's what we're going to do to protect him." A's placed LHP Dallas Braden on the bereavement leave list. Braden will miss his regularly scheduled start on Tuesday. It's not currently known how long he will be out. Royals acquired outfielder Ryan Freel and cash from the Cubs for a player to be named. Freel was designated for assignment by Chicago last week. He batted .143/.226/.143 in 28 at-bats for the Cubs. Freel is expected to join the Royals on Tuesday for that night's game in Detroit. David Eckstein is listed as day-to-day with a strained right hamstring. Eckstein pulled up lame while trying to leg out on infield single. The Padres are already strapped for infielders and will probably need to make a move before they take the field Monday in Arizona. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Phillies have renewed interest in free agent right-hander Pedro Martinez. The Phillies are reportedly exploring all avenues for starting pitching, including the trade market. But with so many teams still in the hunt, there aren't a whole lot of front-line starters being floated. Martinez, 37, is 214-99 with a 2.91 career earned run average, but went 5-6 with a 5.61 ERA last season with the Mets. He's thought to be seeking a $5 million salary.
