THT Daily: More Trades?by Matthew CarruthAugust 27, 2008 Major League News for August 27Player News Yesterday’s Results Today’s Games Standings Top Minor League Performances You can always find the most recent THT Daily at http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/content/thtdaily/ Player NewsPlayer Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldBoston's official website reports that the Red Sox have acquired Mark Kotsay from the Braves in exchange for minor league outfielder Luis Sumoza. Kotsay should provide insurance for the Red Sox over the last month of the season, and will likely start until J.D. Drew returns. Sumoza has shown promise as an outfield prospect, and the 20-year-old was hitting .301 with 11 homers at Class A Lowell. Kotsay is expected to join the team prior to Wednesday's game with the Yankees. Jeremy Accardo will miss the rest of the year with his arm problem, the Jays announced on Tuesday. The Jays have called Accardo's injury a strained right forearm since he went down in early May, but it's anyone's guess what's really going on in there. He finishes the season with a 6.57 ERA in 12 1/3 innings. If healthy, he could be a valued part of the Toronto pen next year. Rockies placed LHP Brian Fuentes on the bereavement list. Fuentes will miss 3-7 days with an undisclosed problem. Manny Corpas and Taylor Buchholz will be the primary candidates for saves while he's gone. Corpas is the better bet to get the first opportunity. ESPN.com reports that the Red Sox are close to a deal with the Braves for Mark Kotsay. It sounds like a trade might have been agreed to. However, Boston is in Kotsay's limited no-trade clause and still needs to get him to accept a deal. Kotsay would probably get playing time over Coco Crisp while J.D. Drew is out if he accepts the deal. He'd stand to receive fewer at-bats when everyone is healthy. The Phillies are also believed to be interested in him. If the Braves move him, they'd likely play Brandon Jones in left field, with Gregor Blanco in center for now. They could call up Jordan Schafer next month to start. Blue Jays activated third baseman Scott Rolen from the 15-day disabled list. Rolen takes the spot vacated by Kevin Mench, who was sent down on Monday. He'll probably play as much as his shoulder lets him, but odds are that he'll still get a couple of days off per week and he probably won't be particularly productive when he's in the lineup. It's doubtful that he'll be an asset in mixed leagues. Jose Bautista and Marco Scutaro will lose at-bats. MLB is expected to introduce instant replay to baseball beginning with Thursday's games. Video will be used only to determine whether fly balls went over the fence or if potential home runs were fair or foul. It will be up to the crew chief to determine whether replay is needed on any particular play. The way it will work is that umpires will leave the field, technicians at MLB Advanced Media in New York will show umpires the video and the crew chief will make the final call. So, the entire process is in the hands of the people who don't like to have their decisions questioned and who have seemingly infinite job security no matter their level of competence. This should be exciting. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.
