Tom Gorzelanny will not make his next scheduled start because of a strained lower back.
"If he had to pitch Tuesday, he could," manager John Russell said. "We just want to make sure this isn't something that lingers for months, so we'll give him a few extra days to feel better and to get some work on the side."

The Marlins will bat Hanley Ramirez third in the lineup until Josh Willingham comes off the disabled list.
"We'll try it for 10 games and see if it's permanent or it's not permanent," manager Fredi Gonzalez said Friday. "I think the time has come where we may need to. It's a totally different lineup without (Miguel) Cabrera there." Either Alfredo Amezaga or Cody Ross will lead off.

Aramis Ramirez was hit on the wrist by an Adam Wainwright fastball Friday night, but stayed in the game.
Ramirez went down for a few moments and was noticeably grimacing as he was accompanied by Cubs trainers on the way to first base. It wouldn't be a surprise if he missed Saturday's day game because of swelling.

Shaking off some fingernail troubles, Chien-Ming Wang limited the Mariners to one run in six innings to win Friday.
Wang got a visit from the trainer in the fifth to look at what appeared to be his thumbnail. He stayed in, but it was clearly bothering him on a one-out walk to Jamie Burke. Nevertheless, Yuniesky Betancourt went on to swing at the first pitch he saw, a low-and-away sinker, and rolled into a routine double play to get Wang out of the inning. Wang went back out for the sixth after getting some work done in the dugout and allowed his only run of the game before leaving after 90 pitches. He became the AL's first six-game winner.

Carls Gomez left Friday's game in the fifth inning with an apparent head injury.
Gomez was drilled in the helmet by Ivan Rodriguez's throw during a headfirst slide on his steal attempt. He was down for several minutes, not moving for most of them, but he was able to get up and walk over to the cart that was brought out for him before being driven off the field. It's likely that he has a concussion, so there's a chance he'll go on the DL. Denard Span would probably be called up to fill in for him.

Rich Hill was pulled after walking four and allowing one run in the first inning Friday against the Cardinals.
Well, the Cubs took a pitcher with control problems and didn't use him for nine days. It should have come as no surprises that things went from bad to worse. Manager Lou Piniella showed no patience at all with Hill today, pulling him after he walked in a run when he bounced a 3-2 pitch with two outs in the first. They'll certainly have to send him down after this one. Either Jon Lieber or Sean Marshall can take the open rotation spot until Hill finds the strike zone.

Marlins placed outfielder Josh Willingham on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 18, with a sore lower back.
Willingham was off to a terrific start, making this an ever bigger loss. He was hitting .341/.406/.637, giving him a mere 400 points of OPS on Luis Gonzalez. Gonzalez will get most of the playing time in left field for now.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that Yovani Gallardo has a torn ACL.
An examination of Gallardo in Milwaukee on Friday morning revealed the injury, which Gallardo suffered in a collision with Reed Johnson on Thursday. The team will wait until swelling subsides to determine if he needs surgery, but there's a good chance he'll miss the rest of the season. Dave Bush will be recalled and replace him in the rotation.

The Rays hope to have B.J. Upton back from a strained left shoulder on Saturday.
Upton aggravated the shoulder on a swing during Thursday's game. "It looks bad right away. It feels bad right away," Upton said. "But this is the best it's ever felt right after, so we shouldn't think too much of it." Nathan Haynes figures to start in Upton's place tomorrow.

The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.
