THT Daily: NL Central dramaby Matthew CarruthAugust 17, 2007 Major League News for August 17Today’s LinksPlayer News Yesterday’s Results Today’s Games Standings Top Minor League Performances You can always find the most recent THT Daily at http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/content/thtdaily/ THT Links$91.5 Million - The Cubs and Carlos Zambrano agree to a five-year, $91.5 million contract. It includes a full no-trade clause and a sixth year player option for a little over $19 million. Teams do not learn. Return Fire - Scott Olsen's agent retorts back to the media concerning David Samson's comments about Olsen. I'm not sure who's right and who's wrong but I think we can all agree to [expletive] David Samson. The Physics of Baseball - That's the title of Alan Nathan's website which provides a wealth of information for the curious baseball fan including some good stuff on the Pitch/FX data. Astros - The Astros are struggling mightily and need to rebuild. Here's how you fail in that regard. Lose your first two picks for signing Carlos Lee and Woody Williams and than don't sign your third or fourth round selections. Player NewsPlayer Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldNationals GM Jim Bowden said Thursday that Nick Johnson will miss the rest of the season. It had been starting to look that way. Johnson's broken leg is supposed to be healed, but pain in his hip has proven to be too difficult of a setback for him to overcome. He's expected to undergo another surgery at some point, and there is concern about whether he'll be ready for the beginning of 2008. Don't think that Johnson's long-term outlook didn't play some role in the Nationals' decision to extend Dmitri Young. David Wells is drawing interest from the Dodgers and Rockies after clearing waivers and becoming a free agent Thursday. Both teams should be willing to put him right in the rotation, and since that's the case, we imagine Wells would prefer staying close to San Diego and joining the Dodgers. Commissioner Bud Selig announced that he will not take any disciplinary measures against Jason Giambi given his cooperation with Senator George Mitchell's investigation and his off-field charitable activities. How ridiculous. The only reason Selig didn't issue a suspension months ago is that he knew there was no way it'd hold up in front of an arbitrator. Everything else is merely politics. Giambi essentially admitted to using steroids in an interview earlier this year, but since he didn't pinpoint when it happened, there was never anything that could be done.
