They are the Devil Rays infielders. Steady as she goes - The A's extended the contracts of two of their most important properties: general manager Billy Beane and president Mike Crowley, who are now spoken for through 2014. Notable - A's catcher Jason Kendall hit his first home run in 157 games yesterday as part of a 3-for-4 night. Taiwanese hits - Hong-Chih Kuo hit the first home run ever hit by a Taiwanese player in Major League Baseball yesterday, while compatriot Chien-Ming Wang got the win a 4-1 Yankees triumph over the Diamondbacks, driving media coverage on the island to a frenzy. Player NewsPlayer Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldBud Selig is planning to suspend Jason Giambi next week if he does not cooperate with George Mitchell's investigation on steroid use, a high-ranking MLB official told USA TODAY. It's hard to imagine any such suspension getting past an arbitrator. We're as disgusted with Giambi as anyone, but it's ludicrous to attempt to suspend him for kind of, sort of admitting to something everyone already knew he did, especially when MLB is trying to get players to cooperate with this investigation. Ian Snell gave up seven hits and an unearned run Wednesday in his first career complete game, an 8-1 victory over Texas. Snell is on fire, having surrendered just three earned runs in three starts this month, improving to 6-4 with an ERA just a shade over 2.50. He entered the night eighth in the NL in ERA and he's also moving up the strikeout leaders with another seven tonight. Snell walked just two, throwing 105 pitches in all -- 69 for strikes. We are definitely witnessing the emergence of one of the league's brightest young starters. Braves activated third baseman Chipper Jones from the 15-day disabled list. Jones is in the lineup as a designated hitter tonight. Yunel Escobar is going to move into the utility role with Chipper back, but he'll probably get the start at shortstop tonight with Edgar Renteria still hurting. Devil Rays placed second baseman B.J. Upton on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 9, with a strained left quad. The Rays will go with Ty Wigginton and Josh Wilson at second base until Upton makes it back from the DL. The team is hopeful he won't miss more than the minimum. Huston Street (elbow) reportedly suffered a setback and has been shut down after experiencing pain when he played catch Friday. Street is expected to seek a second opinion on his elbow after initially being diagnosed with no structural damage to the ligament by Dr. Lewis Yocum. The San Francisco Chronicle suggests that Street returning before the All-Star break now "seems unlikely" and reports that surgery is an option. A.J. Burnett will miss at least one start with a strained right shoulder suffered in Tuesday's game. "He's fine," manager John Gibbons said Wednesday. "He'll miss one start. He doesn't need to go on the DL, we don't think." Josh Towers, who was supposed to be skipped, will start Sunday in Burnett's place. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.
