Rays exercised outfielder Carl Crawford's $8.25 million option for 2009. An easy call. The Rays also have a $10 million option on Crawford for 2010, so barring a major injury, he's not going to be a free agent for another three years. Had he not signed a long-term deal with the Rays four years ago, this would have been his walk year.

Pedro Martinez will return to New York for an MRI after straining his left hamstring in Tuesday's game. "He said he felt a little twinge or pop," manager Wille Randolph said. "That’s not always good, but we’ll let it calm down and get an MRI." It'd be a surprise if Martinez avoided the DL. There's certainly no reason to take chances in April.

Josh Beckett appears likely to come off the DL on Sunday after allowing one run over five innings in a minor league intrasquad game on Tuesday. Beckett struck out six and walked none while throwing 64 pitches against A-ball hitters. If he returns Sunday, he'll face the Blue Jays and Roy Halladay.

Giants GM Brian Sabean said the Giants aren't hearing much interest for Steve Kline. The Giants designated Kline, 35, for assignment on March 29. The team has about a week left to get a trade done before they are required to waive him. Expect the veteran left-hander to get snatched up off waivers rather quickly, if it comes to that.

The Cardinals will stick to their scheduled rotation which places Adam Wainwright's next start on Saturday. Wainwright only pitched three innings in the season opener Monday before it was postponed because of rain. He could probably pitch as early as Thursday, but manager Tony La Russa doesn't want to mess with the schedule. "Why disrupt everybody," he said.

Marcus Giles reportedly changed his mind about signing a minor league deal with the Dodgers after agreeing to terms with the team. According to the L.A. Daily News, Giles was driving to join the Triple-A Las Vegas affiliate from his home in San Diego, only to turn around before he got there. The plan was for Giles to play third base for the 51s for about 10 days before being called up by the Dodgers. Now he might be considering retirement.
