Athletics placed RHP Rich Harden on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 3, with a strained back muscle. Manager Bob Geren said the Athletics will shut Harden down for an undetermined number of days before letting him try to throw again, so he might not return when eligible next Friday. Lenny DiNardo is likely to start in his place Saturday.

Red Sox placed third baseman Mike Lowell on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left thumb. If the ligament is damaged enough, Lowell could miss months. However, the Red Sox haven't given any indication yet that it's that serious of an injury. They'll go with Kevin Youkilis at third base and Sean Casey at first base for now. Jed Lowrie could soon start playing against lefties, but he's going to need some reps at the position first. Casey is a fine short-term option in AL-only leagues. Youkilis should have third-base eligibility in practically every format by the time Lowell returns, giving him additional value.

Indians signed RHP Fausto Carmona to a four-year, $15 million contract with club options for 2012, 2013 and 2014. Carmona gets a $750,000 signing bonus and guaranteed salaries of $500,000 this year, $2.75 million in 2009, $4.9 million in 2010 and $6.1 million in 2011. The Indians have options for $7 million in 2012, $9 million in 2013 and $14 million in 2014. The price of the first option could escalate by $1 million and the price on the other two by $2 million each, meaning Carmona could earn up to $48 million. If the options aren't exercised, Carmona will be a free agent for the first time after the 2012 season.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.

Game of the Day
It took 12 innings, but the Mets beat the Phillies, 4-3, to take a series from the Phils (two of three games) for the first time since last June. The winning run scored on a very close play at the plate by Jose Reyes, who was batted in by Angel Pagan, who’s been filling in admirably for Moises Alou.
