Despite issuing his first two walks since July, Greg Maddux beat the Pirates on Tuesday by allowing three runs in five innings. It was a sloppy outing for Maddux, who lost his walkless streak after 59 2/3 innings. He allowed seven hits, including four straight with two outs in the two-run first, and he issued a wild pitch. Still, Maddux picked up win No. 13, a mark he's reached 20 years in a row. That breaks a tie with Cy Young, who did it 19 straight seasons.

Micah Owings pitched a two-hitter in the Diamondbacks' 5-0 win over the Giants on Tuesday. Owings had his last turn skipped after pitching just 5 2/3 innings in his first two starts of September. The apparently rejuvenated right-hander excelled tonight, even if it was against a pretty brutal lineup. He walked one and struck out four while throwing 101 pitches. The Diamondbacks have Thursday and Monday off, so it's unclear what they'll do with Owings now. They won't have to start him again until the final weekend, but they might want to use him before then.

Ben Sheets left Tuesday's game with tightness in his left hamstring, and the Brewers said his status would be evaluated Wednesday. If it was something he could have pitched through, he should have stayed in tonight. That it wasn't means there's a real chance he'll miss his start Sunday. Claudio Vargas or Chris Capuano would fill in.

Since the right-hander is up to 215 innings this season, the Rays have decided to shut down James Shields, effective immediately. This is quite a surprise. We thought Scott Kazmir might get shut down, but he'll make two more starts and be limited to 100 pitches in both. J.P. Howell is going to start Wednesday in place of Shields, who finishes his breakthrough year 12-8 with a 3.85 ERA and a 184/36 K/BB ratio.

Orlando Hernandez, who has a bunion on his sore right foot, is expected to where a boot for another seven to 10 days. The hope is that El Duque will return to make one regular-season start. If he's not ready by the end of next week, the Mets may have to go with Oliver Perez as their fourth starter should they make it to the postseason.

Bartolo Colon, who returned from an elbow injury last week, is being scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday because of back soreness. "Yesterday he threw on flat ground and it felt a little looser, but it just hasn't recovered to a point where we would want him to go out there," manager Mike Scioscia said. "So we'll give him a little extra time and see how he comes out of the treatment these next three or four days and let this thing run its course. Hopefully he'll get a chance to start next week." It'd be hard to include him in the postseason rotation unless he really impresses next week. Ervin Santana will fill in Wednesday against the Rays.

Albert Pujols was a late scratch Tuesday due to a strained left calf muscle. Miguel Cairo replaced him, with Scott Spiezio going from third base to first. Pujols is viewed as day-to-day.

Alexei Ramirez, who led the Cuban league in homers this year, has left Cuba and hopes to play in MLB next year after establishing residency in the Dominican Republic. Ramirez apparently left Cuba legally, as his wife is a Domincan citizen. If everything goes smoothly, perhaps he'll be able to sign with a team this winter. Ramirez has experience at second base, shortstop and in center field. Cuban players have tended to disappoint in the majors, but Ramirez has the talent to play regularly.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.
