THT Daily: Powerhouseby Matthew CarruthAugust 12, 2007 Major League News for August 12Player News Yesterday’s Results Today’s Games Standings Top Minor League Performances Stats You can always find the most recent THT Daily at http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/content/thtdaily/ Player NewsPlayer news items are provided by RotoworldAndruw Jones plans to have an X-ray or MRI exam on his aching left elbow when the Braves return to Atlanta. Jones doesn't want to sit out against Philadelphia this weekend though. "Not against these guys," he said. "Every time I swing and miss, it hurts. It affects you when you make contact and when you don't. It's still no excuse for not producing." Before Saturday, he had just a .199 average in 87 games since May 2. Brandon Webb extended his scoreless-inning streak to 33 with his second straight shutout Saturday against the Nationals. Webb had his fourth 10-strikeout game of the season in another brilliant outing. He broke his own Diamondbacks record for consecutive scoreless innings tonight. He had 30 last year in a stretch that also contained back-to-back shutouts. Webb is fourth in the NL with a 2.77 ERA and second with 155 strikeouts. Josh Beckett came within one out of a shutout before allowing two runs Saturday in a win over the Orioles. Beckett still became the league's first 15-game winner after taking a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth. He got two outs after a leadoff double from Brian Roberts, but back-to-back hits from Miguel Tejada and Kevin Millar knocked him from the game. After Manny Delcarmen issued a walk, Jonathan Papelbon came on for the one-out save. Beckett improved to 8-1 with a 1.65 ERA in nine road starts this year. If he could have gotten the shutout, it would have been his first as a member of the Red Sox and third overall. Jay Gibbons will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder on Tuesday. Gibbons, who thinks he injured the shoulder making a diving catch in May, will continue to play through the weekend before being put on the disabled list and missing the remainder of the season. His decision to undergo surgery now means Jay Payton and Aubrey Huff won't have to worry about losing any at-bats the rest of the way. Should the Orioles lose another player to injury, they could give J.R. House or another minor leaguer an extended look at DH.
