Joe Blanton revealed Friday that he pitched through biceps tendinitis during the month of August.
Blanton is 2-0 with a 4.53 ERA in 11 starts as a member of the Phillies, but he had a stretch of rough starts beginnng on August 13 that can probably be blamed on the tendinitis. "Any time you're not comfortable, you try to do different stuff," pitching coach Rich Dubee said. "You try to correct it and you compound the problem."

Milton Bradley says he will seek a multi-year deal this offseason.
Bradley is finishing up the best season of his career. "I just know I deserve to quit getting these one-year deals," he said. "I need to have a long-term contract. I'm not just a rent-a-player for one year. I'm looking for fair value. I'm one of the better hitters in the game, and .320 hitters with .440 on-base percentages don't grow on trees, so you need to take advantage of it when you got it." Rangers' brass began contract talks with the 30-year-old's agent back in July, but no deal came close to satisfying him. He would probably prefer to DH with an American League club.

Jack Cust fanned twice Friday to break the AL single-season record for strikeouts.
We always knew Cust would do great things if he got his chance. Cust is up to 187 strikeouts, giving him one more than Rob Deer had for the Brewers in 1987. Despite having the AL record all to himself, Cust is third in baseball in strikeouts this season. Ryan Howard and Mark Reynolds both have 192.

Fausto Carmona was one of four player ejected from Friday's game against the Tigers after a benches-clearing incident in the seventh inning.
Carmona hit Gary Sheffield with a pitch and later exchanged words with the volatile DH after a pickoff throw to first base. Sheffield charged the mound, and there were several punches exchanged after the benches cleared. With a suspension looming, Carmona might have thrown his last pitch of the season. He gave up four runs in 5 1/3 innings tonight.

Red Sox placed RHP Bartolo Colon on the suspended list.
Whatever it takes for a World Series ring? Hardly. Colon didn't want to pitch in relief, so it seems that his Red Sox career is over. He's already gone home to the Dominican Republic.

Shaun Marcum will undergo Tommy John surgery and could miss all of 2009.
Maybe it would have happened anyway, but it needs to be remembered that the Jays had Marcum back pitching in games within a month when he went down with a sore elbow earlier this season and kept running him out there despite clearly diminished velocity and poor command, two signs that he was still injured. While it's hard to argue with the results the Jays have had on the mound lately, this is the third young pitcher they've had go down with a major arm injury in the last year. Dustin McGowan and Casey Janssen were the others.

The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.
