Player NewsPlayer Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldAn MRI revealed a small tear in the right quadriceps of Alfonso Soriano, increasing his estimated time on the sidelines to as much as six weeks. "The latest from the MRI was that there is a small tear in the quad," manager Lou Piniella said before Monday night's game against Houston. "It's about one centimeter. We think he'll be out four-to-six weeks. We think it will be around Labor Day. We were expecting this. It could have been worse." Well, it is worse than what we were originally told -- that Soriano would only miss two-to-four weeks. This is a mjor blow to a Cubs team that's been baseball's best since early June. Red Sox activated RHP Curt Schilling from the 15-day disabled list. Schilling started Monday night against the Angels and threw 83 pitches in a 4-2 loss. LHP Javier Lopez was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket to make room for him on the roster. Cubs purchased the contract of IF/OF Eric Patterson from Triple-A Iowa. It's surprising that they aren't turning to Felix Pie with Alfonso Soriano heading to the disabled list, but Patterson is a also a very good prospect and hit .299 with 14 homers, 62 RBI and 16 stolen bases at Triple-A. Patterson began the season as a second baseman, but has recently converted to the outfield and figures to play there in Chicago, perhaps in a platoon with Matt Murton. Corey Patterson's younger brother, Cubs fans are no doubt hoping that Eric pans out a little better.
