THT Daily: Schilling and the Padresby Matthew CarruthJune 08, 2007 Major League News for June 8Today’s LinksPlayer News Yesterday’s Results Today’s Games Standings Game of the Day Top Minor League Performances You can always find the most recent THT Daily at http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/content/thtdaily/ THT LinksUndervalued? - Are the Cardinals undervaluing Anthony Reyes as they keep him on the farm while using inferior pitchers at the major league level? Or maybe they're just delaying his free agency clock.Walk or Not? - With a runner on third in a tie game at the bottom of the ninth and less than two outs, is it statistically sound to walk runners to set up forces at any base? React Like an Athlete - The ability to react quickly and precisely, so vital in sports, may actually be teachable. 500 - Trevor Hoffman records his 500th save. Player NewsPlayer Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldCurt Schilling lost a no-hitter with two outs in the ninth Thursday, but still tossed his first shutout since 2003 in a 1-0 win over the A's. Closer than Schilling had ever come to one. It could have been a perfect game for the 40-year-old if not for a Julio Lugo error on a routine grounder in the fifth. The play meant Schilling had to face Shannon Stewart for a fourth time, and Stewart took a first-pitch fastball the other way for a single to break it up. Still, it was an awesome performance for a team in clear need of one. Schilling hadn't pitched a shutout since his final season in Arizona before stopping Boston's four-game losing streak today. Devil Rays selected LHP David Price with the first pick in the 2007 draft. Price was atop most draft boards after going 11-1 with a 2.63 ERA and a 194/31 K/BB ratio in 133 1/3 innings in his junior season at Vanderbilt. The 6-foot-5 left-hander is nearly as ready as Andrew Miller was a year ago, and his mid-90s fastball-slider combination gives him plenty of upside. There's some chance that he'll reach the majors in the second half of the season, though it'd make more sense for the Rays to try out the rest of their Triple-A starters first. Assuming that his heavy college workload doesn't catch up to him, he could be a future No. 1 or No. 2 starter. Aramis Ramirez won't play this weekend after injuring his left knee Wednesday, but the Cubs are hopeful he'll avoid the DL. "He's got a severe case of patella tendinitis and we're going to see how he responds with treatment and with rest over the weekend, and then try to make a decision, probably Monday," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "If we can ride this thing out, I think that's our preference." Cesar Izturis, Mark DeRosa and Ryan Theriot will all play regularly while Ramirez is out. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.American League East Pwins Diff BOS 38 21 .644 0.0 37 1 Game of the DayIt takes a lot to knock out a near-no-hitter as the game of the day, but the Padres did it when they scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Dodgers, 6-5. The Padres entered the ninth behind 5-1, but managed to tie the score before even registering one out, with Adrian Gonzalez and Mike Cameron providing key hits. Reliever Jonathan Broxton, who pitched the entire ninth for the Dodgers (ace reliever Takashi Saito was unavailable) then issued a bases-loaded walk to Russell Branyan, handing the victory to the Padres. The Padres now have sole possession of first place in the NL West.
