No Padres pitcher has thrown a no-hitter, and Young was only the second in the past 30 years to reach the ninth inning without allowing a hit. The other was Andy Ashby in 1997. Steve Arlin did so in 1972, and Clay Kirby pitched eight hitless innings before being removed for a pinch-hitter in 1970. Chien-Ming Wang recorded his 18th victory in the Yankees' 4-1 win over the Devil Rays. Wang tied Johan Santana for the major-league lead in victories, and he equaled the all-time single-season mark for pitchers born in Asia. The record was set by Chan Ho Park for the Dodgers in 2000. Gary Sheffield returned to the Yankees' lineup as a first baseman, a position that he had never played in his 19 seasons in the majors. Cole Hamels struck out 10 batters in 6 2/3 innings to earn the victory in the Phillies' 5-2 win over the Marlins. It was the fourth time this season that Hamels has reached double-figures in stikeouts. Ryan Zimmerman drove in one of the Nationals' runs in a 3-2 win over the Mets. It was Zimmerman's 100th RBI of the season, a mark reached by only two other National League rookies in the past 50 years: Mike Piazza in 1993 (112) and Albert Pujols in 2001 (130). Craig Biggio's two-out, game-winning single in the Astros' 6-5 victory over the Cardinals was the 16th walkoff hit of his career, but his first since the second game of the 2003 season. Barry Bonds drove in six runs in the Giants' 13-12 loss to the Brewers. At age 42, Bonds became the oldest player with six or more RBI in one game since 43-year-old Carlton Fisk had six RBI for the White Sox in a 1991 victory over the Twins. Bonds hit his 733rd career home run, tying the National League record that Hank Aaron has held since 1972. Only three other players have held the mark over the past 75 years: Rogers Hornsby (1929-37), Mel Ott (1937-66) and Willie Mays (1966-72). The Giants scored four runs in the top of the first inning at Milwaukee, only to allow five in the bottom of the inning. According to Elias, the last time the Giants blew a lead of at least four runs before the end of the first inning was 101 years ago, on June 9, 1905, at Pittsburgh, when they scored five in the top of the first and allowed six in the bottom of the inning.
