Garciaparra tops the NL in hitting at .359, with 10 home runs and 49 RBI. In his first year with the Los Angeles Dodgers, he's playing first base. The All-Star game will be Tuesday night in Pittsburgh. The rosters were announced Sunday, save for the last two players to be picked in fan voting on the Internet. The Cincinnati Reds acquired Eddie Guardado and cash from the Seattle Mariners on Thursday for minor league pitcher Travis Chick. The Reds made the trade a day after blowing two leads in extra innings before losing 6-5 in the 13th at Milwaukee. After the game, Cincinnati reliever Brian Shackelford was arrested on suspicion of third-degree sexual assault. The Reds activated third baseman Edwin Encarnacion and obtained outfielder Dewayne Wise from Triple-A Louisville. To make room, the Reds designated outfielder Quinton McCracken for assignment and shipped pitcher Elizardo Ramirez to Class-A Dayton so he can start on his regular turn Monday during the All-Star break. Wise and Encarnacion were set to join the Reds for Thursday's game in Atlanta. Right-hander Jon Lieber, out for more than a month due to a groin injury, was reinstated from the disabled list and will start Friday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was hurt while fielding a ground ball on May 29 against Washington. Lieber is 3-5 with a 5.79 ERA in 11 starts this season. To make room on the roster for Lieber, the Phillies optioned Scott Mathieson to Double-A Reading. Devil Rays closer Tyler Walker had Tommy John surgery Thursday on his right arm by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. His expected recovery time is 12 months. All-Star ace Pedro Martinez was placed on the disabled list by the New York Mets on Thursday due to pain in his right hip. Martinez missed his scheduled start on Monday and can now rest through the All-Star break. "This is the perfect time to do this," Martinez said. Martinez was chosen for the NL All-Star team but won't take part in next week's festivities in Pittsburgh, general manager Omar Minaya said. Heath Bell was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to take Martinez's place on the Mets' roster. Jose Lima will take the mound for the Mets on Friday against the Marlins and Mike Pelfrey will make his major-league debut on Saturday. Los Angeles Dodgers closer Eric Gagne, limited to 16 appearances since the beginning of last season because of elbow problems, might need back surgery. The 30-year-old right-hander was admitted to St. Vincent Medical Center on Wednesday because of lower back pain the Dodgers said was unrelated to baseball activity. "Gagne was seen by Dr. (Robert) Watkins, and had an MRI today," Dodgers trainer Stan Johnston said before Thursday night's game against the San Francisco Giants. Johnston said the examination revealed two herniated disks. Cubs starter Greg Maddux (7-9) gave up six hits and two runs in six innings on Thursday at Milwaukee to drop to 7-9, meaning he will likely go into the All-Star break with a losing record for only the second time since 1991 and fourth time in his career. Maddux is now 2-9 since starting the year 5-0. The Giants optioned LHP Jack Taschner to Triple-A Fresno. The Orioles designated outfielder Luis Matos for assignment and purchased the contract of outfielder Luis Terrero from Triple-A Ottawa. Terrero first joined the Orioles in April 19 when Matos went on the DL. Two days after hitting a game-ending home run, Ryan Zimmerman delivered a game-winning, two-out single in the 11th inning Thursday to give the Washington Nationals an 8-7 victory over the Florida Marlins. Zimmerman hit a 3-1 pitch from reliever Jason Vargas through the middle to score Nick Johnson, who had started the inning by reaching base on an error by shortstop Hanley Ramirez. Zimmerman entered the game leading the National League with 34 hits with runners in scoring position, and the rookie third baseman has hit game-ending homers on Father's Day and Independence Day. This game-winning hit gave him 58 RBI, tops among all rookies in the majors. The Nationals reinstated outfielder Alex Escobar from the 15-day disabled list Thursday and optioned left-handed pitcher Mike O'Connor to Triple-A New Orleans. According to the Rocky Mountain News, Rockies 2B Kaz Matsui, who is currently with their Triple-A team, had an MRI on his back and has a bulging disk. The veteran, who was on fire while hitting for the Sky Sox, is on the minor league disabled list. THT StatsYesterday, we looked at each batter’s “predicted OPS” (or PrOPS) to see who was most likely to perform worse in the second half of the year. Today, we’ll do the same thing, only in reverse. Here’s a list of the twenty batters with the biggest negative difference between their actual OPS and predicted OPS, which indicates a strong chance for improvement in the second half.Adam Dunn has had a negative variance each of the past three years (he’s sort of an un-PrOPS batter) but never this negative, and Yadier Molina, who is having a terrible season at bat (even by his standards) should improve, too. Unfortunately for Pirate and Royal fans, not a single one of their players made the list.
