Player News
Player news items are provided by RotoworldAfter Josh Beckett failed against the Rangers, C.C. Sabathia became the game's first 12-game winner Saturday by allowing three runs -- two earned -- in seven innings versus Tampa Bay.
Sabathia struck out eight and walked none while stating his case to be the AL's starting pitcher in the All-Star Game. Dan Haren is the more deserving choice, but we wouldn't be surprised to see Sabathia get the nod. The big left-hander is seventh in the AL with a 3.20 ERA and third to Johan Santana and Erik Bedard in strikeouts.
Brian Fuentes has temporarily been pulled from the closer's role after blowing four straight save chances.
As terrific as he's been in the past, it shouldn't take much more than one good week to get Fuentes his job back. Still, right now it might be best to back off him a bit. "I don't see where putting him in the extreme, intense innings right now is going to help him," manager Clint Hurdle said. "We'll back him out of that and see if he can just get back into good form." Manny Corpas could be the favorite for saves through the All-Star break.
Oliver Perez has been scratched from his scheduled start Sunday because of a stiff back.
Mike Pelfrey, who was to go Tuesday, will be called up to start in Perez's place Sunday, with Jorge Sosa possibly going on the DL to open up a spot. Perez could then switch spots with Pelfrey and go Tuesday.
Carlos Beltran had his second straight multihomer game -- becoming the first player to turn the trick since he also did it last July -- Saturday as the Mets beat the Phillies 8-3.
Aaron Rowand almost made a terrific catch on the second bomb, leaning over the center-field wall only to have the ball go off his glove. Beltran had four hits on the day. His brutal slump, likely brought on by a quad injury, has offically come to an end. With 14 homers on the year, he still has a pretty good chance of reaching 30, assuming that he can avoid additional nagging injuries.

The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength.
