Long road - Jon Lester made his first start in the majors since being diagnosed with cancer yesterday.

What if... - Dave Cameron images what the Mariners would be like if they were a second-hand store.

Rumor mill - MLB Trade Rumors has the latest word on Octavio Dotel. Fantasy owners take note.

Counting stats - Alex Rodriguez hit his 100th RBI of the season last night. No wonder I haven't heard anything about him from the New York media lately.

Checkers vs. poker - Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield has apparently asked for Troy Glaus in return for Jack Wilson in trade talks with the Blue Jays. The ensuing discussion over at Bucs Dugout includes this nugget:
DL thinks this is fantasy baseball. If he sends enough horrible trades, maybe someone will hit "accept trade" by accident.

Maybe thats all he can hope for at this point...
Hang in there Pirates fans. Hang in there.

The Braves and Angels are the most aggressive suitors for Mark Teixeira, says FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal. Rosenthal labels the Yankees, Red Sox and Giants as on the periphery. The Braves would likely have to part with Jarrod Saltalamacchia to pull off a deal. Yunel Escobar shouldn't be as of much interest to Texas, and Escobar is more useful to the Braves right now anyway. Having Casey Kotchman and Ervin Santana go the other way is the deal that would make the most sense for the Angels. A source told Rosenthal that the chances of a Teixeira deal are 50-50.

Hunter Pence will be out four to six weeks with a small chip fracture in his right wrist. Ryan Braun probably just claimed Rookie of the Year honors. Pence said he'd play today after hurting his wrist during Sunday's game, but the chip fracture was found when an MRI was performed today. The Astros will likely make Chris Burke their full-time center fielder. Craig Biggio could go back to playing more frequently at second base as a result.

Bartolo Colon was pulled with right elbow irritation after giving up four runs in an inning Monday against the A's. Colon hasn't been 100 percent at any point since returning from a torn rotator cuff, and the Angels should consider shutting him down for a few weeks to see if he can come back at 100 percent for the stretch run. If it happens, Dustin Moseley might be the favorite to become the fifth starter. Ervin Santana had a nice first start in Triple-A Sunday, but the Angels won't want to go back to him yet.

Jon Lester won his 2007 debut by allowing two runs over six innings and striking out six against the Indians on Monday. A two-run homer from Grady Sizemore in the third accounted for the damage. Lester got into big trouble in the fourth, allowing a leadoff double and a walk. Franklin Gutierrez then helped him out by striking out on what would have been ball four, but that was followed with a four-pitch walk to Kelly Shoppach. That got Julian Tavarez up in the pen. Fortunately, a grounder back to the pitcher followed, resulting in a force play at home, and Sizemore fanned to end the inning. Lester came back out and faced the minimum over the next two frames. He'll get one more start this weekend against the Rays before Curt Schilling returns.

Aaron Harang pitched 10 innings of one-run ball and struck out 10 Monday against the Brewers, but he wasn't involved in the decision in a game in which the Reds won in 12. Pinch-hitter Javier Valentin singled in pinch-runner Norris Hopper in the bottom of the 12th to give Jared Burton his frist career victory. Harang, who threw 121 pitches, became the first Reds pitcher to go 10 innings since the late Rick Mahler went that long on Aug. 30, 1989. He has a 2.43 ERA this month, and he's undefeated in 12 starts since May 20.

Nationals signed second baseman Ronnie Belliard to a two-year, $3.5 million extension through 2009. He'll earn $1.6 million in 2008 and $1.9 million in 2009. Multiyear deals for utilitymen rarely work out well, but this is a fine move for the Nats. Belliard remains an adequate choice as a regular second baseman, and he can serve as a backup at third and first. He's even made three starts at shortstop this year. Since the Nationals won't let this stand in the way should an opportunity to acquire a young middle infielder present itself, it was definitely worth it.

Athletics activated RHP Huston Street from the 15-day disabled list. Street will pitch in middle relief in his first couple of appearances back, but expect him to reclaim the closer's role from Alan Embree by the end of the week.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.

Game of the Day
It took twelve innings for the Reds to beat the Brewers, 2-1. Aaron Harang pitched ten innings of one-run ball, while Chris Capuano pitched eight innings of the same. Ryan Braun supplied the Brewers’ only offense with a home run and two other hits. Braun now has 16 home runs in 51 games. Milwaukee’s lead over Chicago is now just three games.
