Player News

X-rays revealed no major problems, but Torii Hunter does expect to miss some time after running into the center-field wall during Monday's game.
He has a contusion in his rib-cage area. "I hate to sit games out, but I don't think I'll be starting these next two games [against the Giants]," Hunter said. "I'm a little sore. Whiplash. That's probably as hard as I've hit a wall." Gary Matthews Jr. will likely fill in.

Ervin Santana will not pitch Tuesday due to right forearm tightness, according to manager Mike Scioscia.
Santana is awaiting the results of an MRI, which were taken Monday. The good news is that the pain appears to be unrelated to the elbow injury that sidelined him ealier this season. Sean O'Sullivan is expected to be recalled from Triple-A to pitch Tuesday. With the night off and other open dates in the Angels schedule, Santana will be off until June 23.

John Smoltz told WEEI.com that he wants to continue pitching beyond this year.
"The reason I had surgery was not to just come back for one year," Smoltz said. "Having surgery certainly quality of life was part of it, but I could have waited to have that. To have surgery at this point, when I did, and not try to milk anymore of the rest of that season, the reason I did that was to pitch well beyond. I figured if I was going to have surgery and I can pitch one year, what prevents me from pitching two years. Something will have to really go wrong to say, "OK I did everything I could and it wasn't working."

Roy Halladay (groin) played catch on flat ground Sunday.
"I just wanted to keep my arm going," said Halladay, of yesterday's session. "I didn't test (the injured muscle) at all. It's still a day-to-day thing." It's still not clear if he'll be able to make his next scheduled start, Saturday against the Nationals. If he's unable, look for the Jays to recall either Brett Cecil or Fabian Castro.

Denard Span could be headed for the disabled list with lingering pain and discomfort related to an inner-ear infection.
Span still experiences dizzy spells during baseball-related activities. He's begun taking medication again, but it might not help immediately. The 25-year-old outfielder is batting .291/.380/.386 with four home runs and 24 RBI in 223 at-bats this season. We'll keep you updated.

Glen Perkins (elbow) will be activated from the disabled list Tuesday.
Perkins will jump right back into the starting rotation, and hopefully he'll bring a little more to the table this time around. The 26-year-old left-hander left behind a 1-3 record, 5.36 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 26/12 K/BB ratio.

Standings

The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.
