Delmon Young was 2-for-4 with a grand slam and five RBI in a win over the Royals on Friday night, closing to within one game of the first-place Tigers in the American League Central.
Young has three straight multi-hit games to his credit. He set the tone for night with a first-inning grand slam off starter Lenny DiNardo. Luckily the Twins built a 10-0 advantage before the Royals started their comeback. With the Tigers loss to the White Sox, the Twins are now two games back with two to play. They get Cy Young candidate Zack Greinke on Saturday.

B.J. Upton hit for the cycle in a win over the Yankees on Friday night.
Upton is the first ever Rays player to ever hit for the cycle. He tripled in the first, doubled in the third, homered in the fourth and singled to complete the cycle in the fifth. It was the second fastest cycle ever. Mike Lansing accomplished the feat through four innings in 2000. Upton finished the night 5-for-5 with six RBI and three runs scored. The five hits tied a career-high. Hampered by injury and ineffectiveness, 2009 has been a major disappointment, but nights like this show why he's such a tremendous talent.

According to MLB.com's Corey Brock, Padres general manager Kevin Towers will not return for the 2010 season.
As Brock notes on his Twitter account, Towers was the longest tenured GM in Major League Baseball. Fair or not, he's taking the fall for consecutive dismal seasons in San Diego. You can't fire ownership.

Hiroki Kuroda was diagnosed with a herniated disc Friday and won't be available for the first round of the playoffs.
It's good news for Vicente Padilla and Jon Garland, who are now candidates for postseason starts, but obviously comes as a decent-sized blow to the Dodgers' championship hopes. Kuroda is 5-2 with a 2.78 ERA since the All-Star break and fared well this season in his only game against the Cardinals, who currently project as L.A.'s first-round opponent.

The Orioles have picked up manager Dave Trembley's option, according to a team press release.
The Orioles are creeping up on 100 losses, but you can't do much worse than Trembley when you're a rebuilding club. He's well-liked by many in the game and hasn't lost the clubhouse. However, Trembley will have to perform among raised expectations in 2010 if he wants to be asked back.

Jeremy Bonderman was suspended for three games for his actions during Thursday's game.
Bonderman was retaliating for Twins pitcher Jose Mijares (who received a fine, no suspension) throwing a ball behind Adam Everett's back. Bonderman hit Delmon Young, who was so incense he had to be restrained from getting in Mijares' grill for perpetuating the situation. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said that the Tigers had "done the right thing" in retaliating. It still doesn't get Bonderman off the hook. Bonderman is appealing, which will push his suspension to the start of 2010. Twins hitting coach Lloyd McClendon was also suspended a game as he was acting manager because Gardenhire was ejected during the Mijares/Everett flap.

Standings

The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.
