Jeremy Bonderman, who had his elbow checked out by doctors after a short and substandard outing, could miss the remainder of the season. "He's obviously not right," manager Jim Leyland said. "We're going to look into it. I'll possibly, and probably, shut him down." It's not looking good for Bonderman and his owners right now, but on the plus side, he said the pain is at the back of the elbow, not near the ligament, where it is usually a precursor to Tommy John surgery. "I had the same thing in 2005," Bonderman said. "They shut me down then, but rest and rehab was all I needed."

Jay Gibbons received shipments of steroids and human growth hormone from an Orlando pharmacy between 2003 and 2005, SI.com reports. Gibbons reportedly received six separate shipments of Genotropin (a brand name for synthetic Human Growth Hormone), two shipments of testosterone and two shipments of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), a hormone produced naturally during pregnancy, but taken by anabolic steroid users to stimulate the production of testosterone. Gibbons' name had surfaced in connection with steroids before, as he's believed to be one of the players named by Jason Grimsley in his affadavit last year.

Ryan Braun homered twice against the Reds on Sunday to reach 30 long balls on the season. Unbelievable. Braun hit a solo shot off starter Phil Dumatrait in the first, then belted a two-run shot off reliever Tom Shearn in the second. We've been big fans of Braun ever since he was selected fifth overall in 2005 draft, but we certainly weren't expecting him to hit like Albert Pujols as a rookie. In addition to his 30 homers, Braun is batting .328 with 79 RBI. His poor defense has limited his value to the Brewers somewhat, but he's still easily the National League's Rookie of the Year.

Jeremy Guthrie left Sunday's game because of a strained oblique. If it's as severe as the one Erik Bedard suffered, Guthrie won't pitch again this season. The Orioles might have to go forward with a rotation of Daniel Cabrera, Jon Leicester, Radhames Liz, Victor Santos and Victor Zambrano, at least until Garrett Olson returns.

Pedro Martinez scattered six hits over five scoreless innings Sunday against the Astros in his second start back. The Astros got Martinez's pitch count up early and loaded the bases in both the second and the fifth, but they couldn't score until Guillermo Mota came in to start the sixth and immediately gave up a homer to Luke Scott. Martinez again topped out at about 87 mph today, but unlike his first start back, he had a very good changeup, helping him strike out four batters. It was quite an encouraging performance, even if a good offense probably would have scored a couple of runs off him.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.

Game of the Day
The race for the National League wildcard spot is almost as intense as the NL Central race, and the Dodgers missed a chance to move up a game when their bullpen ceded a three-run home run to Ray Durham and the Giants in the eighth, losing 4-2. For seven innings, the game was a fine pitching match between Matt Cain and Brad Penny, who each gave up only two runs in seven innings (Penny faced one batter in the eighth). Jeff Kent homered twice for the Dodgers’ two runs.

The wild card-leading Padres lost to the Diamondbacks, and the Phillies (two games out) and Rockies (three games out) both moved up in the standings..
