Eric Chavez called the labrum in his throwing shoulder "shredded" on Saturday after a poor throwing session.
Chavez may be done as a third baseman in this league. "My career is definitely at a crossroads," he said. Chavez might be hinting at a possible move to first base, as he said he's refocused his attention on becoming a productive offensive player once again. "The way I feel about my arm, I know the end result already," he said.

Albert Pujols went 5-for-8 and hit a two-run homer off Aaron Heilman in the top of the 14th to lead the Cards past the Mets 10-8 on Saturday night.
The game included 37 hits and more than 500 pitches. The Mets had four homers, but it was the Cardinals' lone blast that decided it in the end. Pujols' outburst actually came on the heels of a three-game stretch in which he went 0-for-11. The homer was his first since July 4. His previous five-hit game came on July 20, 2004, when he had three homers and a double.

Manager Tony La Russa announced before Saturday's game that Chris Carpenter will start against the Braves on Wednesday.
It will be Carpenter's first start in almost 16 months. He has been out since Opening Day 2007 after experiencing elbow discomfort and eventually undergoing Tommy John surgery. Carp has made two solid rehab appearances, but if anything goes wrong, the Cardinals will easily be ridiculed for rushing him back. He will take Mitchell Boggs' spot in the starting rotation.

GM Theo Epstein told FOX broadcaster Tim McCarver before Saturday's game that the Red Sox will make an effort to deal Manny Ramirez if he waives his no-trade clause.
Does Manny really want out of Boston, where he's on a very good team with fans that adore him and management that has been willing to go out of its way to accomodate him? Or is he just being a drama queen? The Red Sox are leaving it to him to make the next move. If Manny truly wants a trade, then the Red Sox could try to get something done and maybe pick up Adam Dunn as a replacement. The Mets are the one team that would make real sense as a destination. Even if the Angels wanted him, the Red Sox probably wouldn't want to send him to a team they could well end up facing in October.

Indians acquired RHP Anthony Reyes from the Cardinals for RHP Luis Perdomo.
It's nice to see Reyes finally get out of St. Louis. His conflict with pitching coach Dave Duncan over what kind of pitcher he was never figured to come to a positive resolution. Over the next year or so, we'll get a chance to find out whether Reyes was right all along in looking at himself as a power pitcher or if he should have trusted Duncan and began using a sinker as his primary pitch. The Indians may stick him in Triple-A for now, but he should get a chance to join their rotation soon. He'll be a better sleeper in AL-only leagues next year than he will be for the final two months of 2008.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.
