Player Headlines are courtesy of RotoworldTroy Tulowitzki hit for the cycle and plated seven runs on Monday night in Colorado's 11-5 victory over the Cubs.
Tulowitzki completed his cycle with a triple in the seventh and then added an extra two-run single in the eighth for good measure, finishing with five hits and seven RBI -- both career highs. After smacking a homer in his first at-bat, Tulo looked to have another in the second, but it was ruled foul by a foot and the call was upheld after the first video review in Coors Field history. He ended up singling in the at-bat. The shortstop is slugging .627 since the beginning of June.
Torii Hunter (groin) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga.
Hunter worked out with teammates before Monday's game against the Rays and is still hoping to join the Angels this weekend. "Torii had a great workout today -- running, playing defense and hitting," manager Mike Scioscia said. The outfielder has been sidelined since July 10 with a strained right groin.
According to Jeff Fletcher of AOL Fanhouse, Chad Billingsley (hamstring) will not make his scheduled start Wednesday.
Billingsley tossed an extensive bullpen session Monday evening, the results of which must have been troubling. The Dodgers could slide long reliever Jeff Weaver into the rotation for a day or recall Scott Elbert.
Dr. James Andrews has recommended Tommy John surgery to repair Jordan Zimmermann's ailing right elbow.
Dr. Andrews reviewed a set of MRI results on Monday and gave the suggestion. Zimmermann might seek another opinion, but Andrews is the best in the business and probably has it right. It's a tough blow to the Nationals, who may be without the promising young pitcher for the entire 2010 season. The 23-year-old was 3-5 with a 4.63 ERA in 16 starts this year.
White Sox claimed outfielder Alex Rios off waivers from the Blue Jays.
Rios, 28, is expected to join the White Sox Tuesday in Seattle. He'll bring a .264/.317/.427 batting line, 14 home runs, 62 RBI and a long-term contract worth over $60 million. The outfielder will have to battle for playing time in Chicago this season. But if the club lets impending free agent Jermaine Dye walk this winter, Rios could be the everyday right fielder in 2010.
Diamondbacks optioned outfielder Chris Young to Triple-A Reno.
Young's numbers have fallen flat since he signed a five-year, $28 million deal before the '08 season. The 25-year-old had 32 dingers and 68 RBI in 2007, 22 homers and 85 RBI in 2008 and is batting just .194 with seven home runs and 28 RBI in 103 games this season. Trent Oeltjen may enjoy an extended stay in the bigs to help with the lack of depth in the outfield. Ryan Roberts might also see some action at a corner outfield spot.
Jamie Moyer has been moved to the bullpen.
Moyer steps aside to make room for Pedro Martinez. "Based on our reports on how Pedro has pitched in his rehab starts, we felt it was time to move him into our rotation," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "Jamie was a total professional and team player when we let him know of the decision to move him to the bullpen. He has been and will continue to be a very important part of this team." Moyer is 10-9 with a 5.47 ERA.
Pedro Martinez will make his first major league appearance of the season on Wednesday against the Cubs, Phillies manager Charlie Manuel told the media.
In three minor league rehab starts, Martinez allowed seven earned runs in 12 1/3 innings. He struck out 11 and allowed three runs on five hits over six innings for Double-A Reading last Wednesday. If Martinez is still available in your NL-only league, it's time to snap him up.
Cristian Guzman has cleared waivers and will not be traded to the Red Sox, reports Bill Ladson of MLB.com.
"Guzman was on eggshells for two days asking [acting general manager Mike Rizzo] whether or not he was going to be traded," a baseball source told Ladson. "That story should have never came out." Guzman is currently riding a 15-game hitting streak. Overall, he is batting .317 with five home runs and 40 RBI.
