Team doctors have told Blalock to take a week off. He has been out since late April and continues to struggle with his rehab. It'd be a miracle if the guy returns before the end of July. C.C. Sabathia hurled eight scoreless innings and struck out 11 in a defeat of the Reds on Saturday. Sabathia has returned to Cy Young form with a complete-game shutout and three 10-strikeout games in his last four starts. He allowed 27 runs in his first four starts of the season and just 21 in 13 starts since. Yankees placed outfielder Hideki Matsui, retroactive to June 23, on the 15-day disabled list with a sore left knee. Matsui's consecutive games streak is ancient history now. He's been quite productive this year, but this guarantees that he'll play in fewer than 150 games for a third year in a row. Wilson Betemit will benefit most from his absence and could have a little short-term value in AL-only leagues. Cardinals activated LHP Mark Mulder from the 15-day disabled list. Even though the left-hander has never worked in relief before, the Cards are going to throw Mulder right into their pen. The experiment has disaster written all over it. Mulder had a 6.55 ERA and a .338 average against in the minors, and he hasn't pitched in a week after being scratched from his last start with back stiffness. Carlos Delgado had a grand slam, a three-run homer and a two-run double for a career-high nine RBI as the Mets steamrolled the Yankees 15-6 in the first game of Friday's two-stadium doubleheader. It was a Mets record, breaking the mark of eight held by Dave Kingman. The grand slam off Ross Ohlendorf was the 12th of his career, and he later took LaTroy Hawkins deep. The Mets also got four hits from David Wright today. Luis Castillo scored five runs, and Carlos Beltran homered and scored four runs. Delgado, however, was the story. He has 13 homers and 44 RBI this season. Rays activated first baseman Carlos Pena from the 15-day disabled list. Pena returns after going 0-for-4 in his only minor league game. He's batting sixth tonight, so the Rays are sort of easing him back in. Eric Hinske will go back to getting most of his time in the outfield with Pena back. Willy Aybar and Gabe Gross will lose at-bats. Alberto Callaspo was arrested early Friday morning on DUI charges. A second ugly incident involving Callaspo, who last May was arrested for assaulting his wife. That incident most certainly played a role in Arizona's decision to trade him to Kansas City. Since he's yet to establish himself as more than a mediocre utilityman, he can't afford to keep embarrassing his teams with his off-the-field behavior. According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Orioles and Nationals are well into discussions about a deal that would send Felipe Lopez to Baltimore. Rosenthal doesn't believe a deal will come until after the weekend series concludes. If the Orioles are going to take on the rest of the $4.9 million that Lopez is due this year, then they'll hardly have to give up anything to get him. He's become their primary shortstop. The Nats will likely go with Ronnie Belliard at second base the rest of the way.
