Jason Marquis threw his second career shutout and won a fifth straight start Wednesday versus the Pirates.
Four of those wins have come against the teams that rank 28th (Pittsburgh) and 29th (St. Louis) in the majors in runs. Still, there's no denying that Marquis has been a whole lot better than we expected. He's getting a lot more grounders than he did last year, though he actually recorded 15 flyball outs tonight. There's no way he can last as one of the league's best pitchers, but maybe he'll be a solid NL-only starter all year long.

Michael Young left Wednesday's game in the fifth inning with left hamstring tightness.
Just as he had warmed up at the plate. Matt Kata and Jerry Hairston Jr. will fill in if Young needs to miss some time. Calling up Joaquin Arias isn't an option, as he remains on the DL.

Even after homering Wednesday, Dave Roberts said he expects to have surgery in the coming days to remove bone chips from his left elbow.
Roberts is scheduled to be examined Thursday by Angels team orthopedist Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles. Surgery would likely cost him 3-5 weeks, so if it's really giving him problems, he might as well get it taken care of now. The slumping Todd Linden would get at-bats in his place, but the Giants might call up Nate Schierholtz to try in right field, with Randy Winn seeing time in center. A trade for outfield help is also a possibility.

Standings
The graphics next to each team are called "sparklines.” They depict each team’s performance over the last month. Each "up" bar is a victory and a "down" bar is a loss. There are horizontal lines for home games and red bars represent games decided by two runs or less. "PWins" is short for Projected Wins, based on each team’s Run Differential, and is often a better measure of a team’s true strength. Other team graphs and stats can be found on our Team Page.
