THT Links: Opening Dayby Matthew CarruthApril 02, 2007 For the record, yesterday was not Opening Day. Yesterday featured one baseball game, at night. Today is Opening Day. The Divine Game - And on a beautiful sunny day here in Philadelphia, who's to say he's not right? Starting the Season Off On the Right Foot - Ryan Armbrust has a look at the top Opening Day performances over time. That Just About Pays For This Past Offseason - The Tribune Company, and the Cubs along with it, are being sold for $8.2 billion by real estate investor Sam Zell. Royal Optimism - This year's Kansas City Royals look, while not contention worthy, a whole lot better than previous iterations. If they can find somebody, anybody, even me, to play SS, and the pitching avoids collapsing, they could flirt around .500 in a less competitive division. Alas, the AL Central looks to be a seriously tough go around. Padres Buy Out Gonzalez's Arby Years - Padres 1B Adrian Gonzalez signed a four-year, $9.5 million extension Minor Trade - The Aussie exodus from Seattle continues as the Mariners swapped minor league pitcher Travis Blackley to the Giants for OF Jason Ellison. At least this means that the Mariners really are not dumb enough to hand a job to Rey Ordonez after all. I <3 Graphs - If you do too, you'll want to bookmark http://www.fangraphs.com where they'll have live win probability charts all season long. Benitez Named Closer - Armando Benitez was named the Giants closer after Brian Wilson was sent down to Triple-A. A's Let Durazo GO - Erubiel Durazo was not offered a position on the Athletics active roster and had previously stated that he will not accept a minor league option. Buck Makes Roster - Sticking in the Bay Area, the A's Travis Buck has made the active roster. Buck has just 238 plate appearances above Single-A ball. Broadcaster Carneal Dies - Hall of Fame broadcaster Herb Carneal died on Sunday. Carneal had been part of Twins' broadcasts since 1962. Opening Day DL Moves Continue - As Reds LHP Eric Milton heads to the disabled list. 2007 Team Slogans - Matt Sammons has a look at each team's marketing campaign entering the season. There are some hilarious ones in there. Monday at THTWhat is Zone Rating? - Sean Smith explains what's so awesome about the new Zone Rating stats from Baseball Info Solutions, which are now available and updated through the season at The Hardball Times. Coffee with Derek Zumsteg: The Cheaters Guide to Baseball - Derek Zumsteg gives the skinny on his book about cheating in baseball.
