@Paul: Thanks! I don’t know that instant replay’s the solution (see also: the timid NFL “refs”), but what bugged me was, ala West, Coulibaly wouldn’t/didn’t/couldn’t offer any explanation, which smacked of such arrogance it was simply irresistable to this cartoonist…thanks for the post! FIFA shields the refs from the press. They said all they needed to about him by not assigning him to any more matches. Clearly there should be replay for any penalty called in the box, whether it results in a penalty kick or in the disallowing of a goal. BTW, Joe West, and several other MLB umpires, are flaming assholes. MLB umpires should all be wired for sound, so that their supervisor can hear if they initiate or exacerbate any argument that takes place, and there should be a replay official in a booth to review all close calls, except those involving balls and strikes. @Jim: I don’t think I need Coulibaly accountable to the media (tho some kind of acknowlegement of All. Those. Fans. would be nice); but I sincerely think some explanation to the players and/or coaches involved was in order, and that (obviously) didn’t happen, for whatever reason. Kinda like West/Buehrle/Guillen (And totally UNlike Joyce/Galarraga/Leyland). Thanks for the post! Posted 06/24 at 06:40 AM

jim c there are more bad ball/strike calls than any other missed calls so why are you (and so many others) so eager to have cameras determine every other call, but not ball/strikes? Posted 06/27 at 11:21 AM

Because, if every pitch gets reviewed, the games will all take 4 hours. I think there could be some way to put some sensors on each batter’s uniform, and sensors in the plate, so that if the ball crossed the plate in the “strike zone”, whatever that really is, the plate umpire would hear a beep in his ear and call the pitch a strike. But I can’t imagine that being accepted at any point in my lifetime. Posted 06/27 at 12:05 PM

Haha, nice one Tuck. I’ve come to the conclusion that human refs will simply blow too high a percentage of close calls that replay becomes worthwhile in all sports.
