Andruw Jones’ batted balls

Posted by Dave Studeman
John Beamer has posted a nice article about Andruw Jones today, including some insightful monthly trends. It will be interesting to see if Andruw does command a big contract this offseason.

As a follow up, perhaps some of you would like to take a look at Jones' batted ball profile. I described the batted ball profile format a couple of weeks ago, but space allowed me to only run it for a few players. Well, here's Andruw's profile:

Jones, Andruw

Net Runs per Ball % of Batted Balls %/OF %/PA Total Net Runs
BFP OF LD GB OF% LD% GB% HR K BB OF LD GB IF NIP Tot R/G
2004 646 0.35 0.46 0.03 31% 16% 48% 20% 23% 11% 46.2 31.5 6.3 -2.3 8.9 90.7 5.3

As expected, Andruw has lost a lot of oomph on his outfield flies (despite hitting more of them), but his line drive production has also declined; in fact, it's declined each of the past four years. Add in lower production on his groundballs and more strikeouts, and you pretty much have a quadruple whammy.

Dave was called a "national treasure" by Rob Neyer. Seriously. Comments about this article can be sent to him through the miracle of e-mail.
