Angel in the outfield
Posted by Alex PediciniWhen the Angels selected Mike Trout with the 25th pick in first round in 2009 out of a New Jersey high school scouts praised his athleticism and upside but repeated that his bat was still raw. Trout has erased doubts with his play this season.
Playing for Cedar Rapids of the Midwest League (Single-A) Trout has put together a triple slash line of .365/.443/.549 over 244 at bats. He has accumulated 30 walks versus just 37 strikeouts and has also swiped 32 bags in 38 tries. The 18-year old center fielder is a solid defender with plus speed and an above average arm.
Trout was tabbed as the organization's third best prospect and best athlete heading into the season. He may not be the same caliber defender as Peter Bourjos, but Trout's bat may allow him to play in a corner spot as well.
Trout is well built at 6'1 217 and he is still learning to tap into his power. He has a short, quick stroke and can drive the ball to all fields. Some suggest he will be able to hit 15-20 home runs annually. Trout has all the tools a player needs and at this point it is about getting more experience and at bats under his belt. He is still likely two or three years away from contributing at the major league level but the Angels have to be exciting about what he brings to the table.

The Angel outfield is a good place for fish. Trout’s season is one of the better stat lines I’ve ever seen for an 18 year old.
