Bill Simmons on Sabermetrics

Posted by Jeremy Greenhouse
This is an early favorite for the most important Sabermetric article of the year. Simmons is easily the most popular sports columnist in America, and it's great to see him back to being the voice of the fan.

Simmons is the Dr. Kevorkian of sports columnists.

I honestly believe 2010 will be known as the year sabermetrics broke. This Simmons article is just the biggest sign in a year of a slow transition towards acceptance of advanced metrics by the community at large. MLB Network has made allusion to fangraphs and stats like OPS+ and Contact% recently. The Mariners 2009 team single handedly opened peoples’ minds up to UZR and the Red Sox off-season cemented the idea as valid. It is very interesting to watch. Very interesting.

Now if only we could get Simmons to use wOBA instead of OPS…  Small steps.

If sabremetrics showed the Red Sox stunk, he’d be totally against it.
