Born and Bred
Posted by Matthew Namee
Being a third-generation Dodgers fan myself, this article by Eric Neel really struck a chord with me. He says of his grandfather, "They were his Dodgers before they were mine." Same here. My grandfather Sam was a fan from the Brooklyn days, and he (with some help from Koufax) taught my dad the ways of Dodger fandom. As for me... well, I'm told "Dodgers" was my first word. Maybe that's true and maybe it isn't, but I've loved the Dodgers all my life.
And after a 7-game losing streak, our Dodgers are still tied for first place. They might not be able to hold out, but as Neel points out, "We're not getting cheated right now."
Matthew Namee cofounded The Hardball Times in 2004, when he was working as the assistant to baseball author and Red Sox executive Bill James. Matthew still lives in Kansas, where he is currently pursuing a law degree. He can be reached at mfnamee [at] gmail [dot] com.
