Chavvy to sign?
Posted by Matthew Namee
ESPN.com reported earlier today (or yesterday, if you're on the East Coast, or reading this on Tuesday rather than Monday) that the A's are about to sign Eric Chavez to a six-year, $66 million extension.
I think this is a nice deal for Oakland. At 26, Chavez is just entering his prime, and he's been damn good already (25 Win Shares a year since 2001). If he kicks his game up a notch like everyone expects, Chavez will be a perennial MVP candidate and a bargain at $11 million a year. We'll have more on this (reported) deal later on, but my gut reaction is, "Another nice move from Billy Beane."
Matthew Namee cofounded The Hardball Times in 2004, when he was working as the assistant to baseball author and Red Sox executive Bill James. Matthew still lives in Kansas, where he is currently pursuing a law degree. He can be reached at mfnamee [at] gmail [dot] com.
