Tuesday, October 06, 2009Greatest game in Metrodome history?Posted by Chris JaffeEarlier this year, I wrote a column for THT titled: "The 10 greatest games in Metrodome history." Looks like I spoke too soon. Clearly, today's game belongs high on the list. Where? Well, it's a judgement call of course. You have to weigh the quality of the game alongside its importance. Still, I don't see how you rank it any lower than third, and frankly, it may very well belong up top. Game Seven of 1991 still has a special place in baseball history just because it was a Game 7 of a World Series, but today's contest was also a winner take all. Was it the greatest game. . . . maybe I'll think otherwise later, but as of right now .. . Yeah, it was the greatest game in Metrodome history. It had comebacks, numerous late-inning dramatics, an 10th inning comeback, plays at the plate - - it was just unreal. With my personal interest in managers, I couldn't help but think while watching it in the final inning that this game dramatizes how it's tough to be a manager. If the Twins lose, Gardenhire gets roasted for blowing through all his relievers. Instead, the Tigers lost so Leyland can get nailed for sticking with his guy for too long. History instructor by day, statnerd by night, Chris Jaffe leads one of the most exciting double lives imaginable; with the exception of every other double life possible to imagine. Despite his lack of comic-book-hero-worthiness, Chris enjoys farting around with this stuff. His new book, Evaluating Baseball's Managers is available for order. I think this probably comes in third. It really wasn’t any more ‘winner take all’ than game 6 of the 1991 World Series; in both cases, if the Twins lose, their season was over. And I put this ahead of the World Series walkoff homerun by the player who epitomized the Twins for a generation. Great game, but ranks number 3 for me. Posted 10/06 at 10:35 PM

I still can’t get this stupid grin off my face. A convincing Vikings win and a great Twins win in two nights? Un-freaking-believable. I think Games 6 and 7 of the 1991 Series are better, but that’s gotta be it. We’re going to be talking about this one for a long time. Posted 10/06 at 10:54 PM

It all depends how you weigh importance vs quality. As a general rule, I’ll lean more towards the latter. It was the greatest important game ever to take place there, though if you factor in importance higher - then, yeah, Game 7 still reigns supreme. Admittedly, I might put Game 7 up above it if I’d watched that one, put I took the 1990s off from baseball. Then again, maybe tommorrow or a few days from now, I’ll come down from my current what-a-game! high. Posted 10/06 at 11:05 PM

I don’t think it beats Game 7 of the ‘91 Series, quite, but it’s no worse than #2.
