How much will Pujols get?

Posted by David Gassko
With Ryan Howard signing a 5-year, $125 million extension, there's been a lot of talk about how that might affect Albert Pujols's next deal. Pujols will be a free agent after the 2011 season (assuming he does not receive an extension before then), and at 31 years of age, that will be his big chance to cash in (on top of the $100 million+ he will have already earned).

But I figured why wait for 2011 (or even early 2012) to see how much Pujols will get when we can poll the smart THT readers right now, and get a pretty good answer via the wisdom of the crowds. So please, go ahead and vote in the two polls below, one of which asks how many years Pujols's new contract will go for and how much money he will get. You have to vote in each separately; it's kind of annoying, but I couldn't figure out any other way to do it.

I'll post results from the poll tomorrow. (And please, remember to vote in both polls! You have to hit submit on the first one, and then when the page reloads, on the second.)

For some reason, I have a feeling Pujols will settle for about 28-30 mil per season with some very player friendly contract language thrown in. I voted for 7 years but I see that as the guaranteed part of the contract.

I could ultimately be way off on the money, it’s just a feeling that Pujols won’t hold out for the highest possible dollar value.

I hope we see the results as a plot and not just separate frequencies/averages…

I’m thinking it will be 5/$150 or so. Maybe six years, but I really think the Cardinals will go for high annual payment with low years.

Not a bad contract at all considering inflation - would only pay Pujols for an average of around 4 wins a season, and he projects to do better than that.  It will be backloaded cause of the big contracts the Cards have on the books now.

Pujols could get more, but I see no reason why he would leave St. Louis for an extra 20 million.  He loves the city, his family lives there, the team has shown a commitment to winning… as long as Yadi and Tony stay, Pujols will be there.

Remember there is the small possibility that Pujols suffers some sort of (gigantic) injury and gets less than 150 mil.
