Tuesday, May 13, 2008What’s wrong with Verlander?Posted by Bryan TsaoEric Seidman takes a look over at FanGraphs. Tigers fans might not be happy. Seidman identifies the main culprit as being a decrease in strikeout rate and an increase in walk rate, and attributes it to a decrease in average fastball velocity from 94.8 mph to 93.0 mph. While it seems as good an explanation as any, I'm not convinced that 2 mph would make such a big difference, though I definitely don't know a lot about such things. Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Bryan Tsao is the editor of The Hardball Times website. He welcomes comments, questions, and suggestions for both himself and the site via email.
