THT’s Graphs are Live

Starting today, THT's team graphs will be available and updated on a daily basis (click on the dropdown menus to see them). We've published these graphs each of the last three years, and also featured them in our Annuals.

Also, bloggers (and others) can create their own team sparklines on our Sparkline Machine, also updated daily.

League Difficulty (Part 4)

In today's article on league difficulty, I wrote that The Book recommended adding 400 plate appearances of average performance to a player's record when regressing to the mean. It turns out I was mistaken, as the authors use different numbers in different parts of the book, but I am told by Tom Tango, one of the authors, that I should be adding more like 220 plate appearances. Of course, that changes our results a bit.

In the Wall Street Journal

The Hardball Times makes a small appearance in this excellent article (sorry, subscription required) on the Wall Street Journal's website this weekend. The article talks about Vince Gennaro's new Diamond Dollars book (which has been highlighted here in the past) and includes excellent insights from baseball insiders.

My favorite quote is at the end of the article:
"I don't know how you can say we're going to get this many wins because of this player," says Aaron Rowand, the center fielder for the Philadelphia Phillies. If statisticians can, says Mr. Rowand, "more power to them."
Come on by THT and Baseball Prospectus anytime, Aaron.

THT’s Team Page

Our page of team statistics, featuring overall team hitting, pitching and fielding stats, is now available for the 2007 season. Check out our unique performance stats when you get a chance, but also note that the graphs have not yet been updated for 2007. Hopefully, I'll get to that later this week.

Matsuzaka Scouting Report

I skipped class today to watch Daisuke Matsuzaka make his first major league start, and boy was that a good decision. I ordered the best buffalo wings in the world, and watched Dice-K spin a beauty. Some notes follow:
