Giants Lose to AAA Affiliate

Ugh. The Giants lose to their AAA affiliate, Fresno. A sign of things to come? Absolutely.

How’s that 20th win?

Phil Birnbaum continues to research the issue of why and how pitchers seem to hone in on 20 wins. The biggest surprise is that their offenses tend to let them down after winning the 20th game. I wonder if managers tend to rest their regulars more often in those games?

Angels may have to trade for starting pitching

Seems like rumor-mongering by the LA Times to me, as the actual Mike Scioscia quote is as follows:
"We're still confident that, in house, we have enough depth on the pitching side," Manager Mike Scioscia said. "The short-term answers are in-house. If we lose guys for longer, the answers might have to come from the outside, but we're not at that point yet."

Nonetheless, the article tosses out some names, the most interesting of which is A's starter Joe Blanton. I can't think of a recent instance of the A's dealing with the Angels, which is probably a function of both the teams being relatively successful over the past few years and former Angels general manager Bill Stoneman being reluctant to trade prospects for veterans when the A's have been rebuilding. Still, it seems doubtful that the Angels would move for Blanton unless they were struggling, and while I still don't think the A's are serious contenders for the division, I do expect them to be decent, and if the Angels are struggling it might be exactly the situation that would make it difficult for the A's to move Blanton to a division rival.

2008 Rays Trade Value Index

Cool post over at Rays Index ranking all the players on their 40-man roster on the basis of their perceived trade value to other teams, starting with Scott Kazmir and ending with third catcher Shawn Riggins.

My only quibble here would be Edwin Jackson at 11, above good prospects like Reid Brignac and Jeff Niemann, and a not terrible major league starter (not to mention the second catcher on my THT Writers League fantasy team) Dioner Navarro.

Players being “clutch” when targeting 20 wins

Phil Birnbaum follows up his previous post by trying to explain why there are more 20-game winners than you would expect. He finds that most of the effect can be attributed to usage, or in other words if you have 18 or 19 wins in September, you get more starts and may even be thrown in relief.

He also finds something interesting with regards to run support for pitchers with 19 and 20 wins, but you should probably just go read the article.
