Reliever BABIP

Posted by Dave Studeman
Pizza Cutter finds that Troy Percival has a career BABIP figure below average. Supposedly, this rocks the common wisdom, but elite relievers have always had a relatively low BABIP. Check out Mariano Rivera's career BABIP someday (okay, I'll tell you. It's .268. Usually, BABIP is around .290). Or read this article of mine from a few years ago (relevant point at the bottom).

The sweet spot

Posted by Dave Studeman
Luke Scott gives Tyler Kepner a vivid demonstration of how small the "sweet spot" is. (Hat tip: Alex)

The Padres’ draft

Posted by Dave Studeman
Speaking of the draft, Paul DePodesta checks in with his first overview of how the Padres go about setting their draft priorities. This is pretty basic stuff ("we have scouts and crosscheckers...") but it's still good information. And DePodesta says that more details will be posted soon.

Location, location

Posted by Mike Fast
I'm catching up on old articles on PITCHf/x-related topics, and I came across a couple of real gems from Jonathan Hale over at Baseball Digest Daily. Back in March he published two studies of results on batted balls based on strike zone location. The first study covers results based on height of the pitch, and the second study covers results based on location across the plate. I highly recommend both articles.

Replay is Coming

Posted by Matthew Carruth
Like it or not, instant replay will be a fact in baseball at some point. At least, that's what umpire supervisor Rich Rieker believes.

Some random discussion on the value of Barry Bonds with Bill James and Tango. It's doesn't really matter what the topic is when these two are talking.

Hot Air Rises

Posted by Matthew Carruth
Homeruns are a bit down so far this year, has temperature played a role? It turns out that it's possible but not in the way you might think.

1980s Vintage Shortstops

Posted by Matthew Carruth
The American League shortstops were a dominant position a decade ago, but now as the big trio has aged and moved off position (or should have in Jeter's case), the position is once again back to its slap hitting ways.

Tabata in Doghouse

Posted by Matthew Carruth
Jose Tabata is back in hot water and his on field performance isn't doing him any favors either.

Paul DePodesta is really smart

Posted by Sal Baxamusa
What evidence do I have for such a bold title? Because he reads THT, and all of our readers are smart!

In his latest straight-from-his-mother's-basement blog entry, the San Diego Padres executive fills us in on the minor Cha Seung Baek for Jared Wells trade. Says DePo:

Cabrera’s baserunning

Posted by Dave Studeman
The Cheat is surprised that Orlando Cabrera hasn't been a particularly good baserunner for the White Sox, despite his reputation and baserunning stats. So he dissects Cabrera's baserunning stats in this post, a good example of why you should dig behind most numbers.
