Team Defense is Incredibly Underrated

Posted by Matthew Carruth
Jeff Sullivan and I were looking around Baseball-Reference's team BABIP numbers a bit and, to paraphrase Jeff's words:
Part of it has to do with the batted ball profile yielded by the pitching staff, but if the Rays keep up their current pace, their 2008 defense would be 248 plays better than their 2007 defense would be with the same pitching staff. Using Tango's number that 1 extra out ~ 0.8 runs saved, that’s nearly 200 runs, which is about 20 wins given the standard 8-10 runs per win theory.

Zambrano the comedian

Here is a hilarious video featuring Carlos Zambrano. Be sure to watch it until the end. (Hat tip: Paul DePodesta).

St. Louis Bats

Dave Cameron brings Ryan Ludwick, the unexpected provocateur of helping St. Louis craft a winning team thus far, under the microscope to see if his early season performance is sustainable.

What Good and Bad Starts Mean to Batters

Posted by Matthew Carruth
MGL looks at hitters who have extraordinarily good or bad Aprils and what they end up doing for the rest of the season. It's an interesting phenomenon especially how it dovetails with his look into the same effects for pitchers.

Where GMs Come From

Posted by Matthew Carruth
Batter's Box goes back and traces the baseball lineage of our current group of General Managers. It is interesting to note just how many personal connections there are across these people.

Historical WPA

Posted by Dave Studeman
Over the weekend, David Appelman added more WPA stats to the Fangraphs site. He's now got WPA for all players from 1974 to 1988. Hopefully, the '90's will be filled in soon. Thanks, David!

Paul DePodesta’s New Blog

Posted by Chris Neault
It looks like San Diego Padres front office member, Paul DePodesta, now has a blog. He also mentions Ducksnorts, a blog written by THT writer Geoff Young. Cool stuff.

The latest Banny Log

Posted by Dave Studeman
Joe Posnanski reports on Brian Bannister's fine game last night, as well as the usual sidebars. Seriously, how can you not root for a pitcher who says "Just had to let my Babip regress before I started dealing again."????

Catchers leading off

Posted by Dave Studeman
BR's Stat of the Day blog reports that the A's may be setting new records by batting catcher Kurt Suzuki in the leadoff position.
