Tuesday, May 13, 2008Falling Off the Padres BandwagonPosted by Bryan TsaoGeoff Young chimes in with a tome breaking down the Padres slow start this season and the fans' reaction. Definitely a great read. Joba gets Gossip Girl mentionPosted by Bryan TsaoIs baseball still America's game or what? Cubs fans not excited about EdmondsPosted by Bryan TsaoThe opening quote says it all: "OH… NO! I feel like crying right now." What’s wrong with Verlander?Posted by Bryan TsaoEric Seidman takes a look over at FanGraphs. Tigers fans might not be happy. Seidman identifies the main culprit as being a decrease in strikeout rate and an increase in walk rate, and attributes it to a decrease in average fastball velocity from 94.8 mph to 93.0 mph. While it seems as good an explanation as any, I'm not convinced that 2 mph would make such a big difference, though I definitely don't know a lot about such things. Will be interesting to see how this plays out. Tavarez is relieved of duty by the Red SoxPosted by Bryan TsaoThis short Boston Globe piece on Julian Tavarez gives an interesting little slice of life for baseball players, describing how rookie Craig Hansen found out that he was staying with the Red Sox when Tavarez started walking around the hotel dining room saying good bye to his former teammates. I always find it interesting to read these little snippets about what it's like to be a baseball player. Everything but averagePosted by Dave StudemanDavid Pinto points out that the Cubs have scored an average of 5.9 runs a game, but they have yet to score either four or five runs in a single game. That is just nuts. Across the major leagues, teams have scored either four or five runs almost 30% of the time. When does your starter lose it?Posted by Dave StudemanPizza Cutter has a nice article on what happens to starting pitchers as they stay in the game. My quick interpretation: every ten pitches adds about .04 runs per game, so a pitcher who has a 4.00 ERA at the beginning of a game has become 4.40 ERA pitcher by his 100th pitch. I'm unclear how his methodology handles the selective sample bias, though he says it does (and I trust him!). |
