What to do with that old ballpark

Posted by Dave Studeman
New York is going to have to replace two old ballparks next year. Here's an amazing piece of architecture in Japan, built to replace an old ballpark in Osaka.

Ranking the races

Posted by Dave Studeman
Pittsburgh Dan Fox has posted an outtake from the Baseball Prospectus pennant race book, in which he ranks the greatest pennant races of all time. No surprise that the 1908 NL is first; the fun fact is that the 1908 AL is 13th. In the multi-division era, the 1977 American League East is ranked first.

Rich Lederer Tackles Omar Vizquel

Posted by Matthew Carruth
Are the lights going out on Omar Vizquel's career? It looks like he can still pick it, but there's a minimum threshold for hitting and he's way under that right now.

SABR reports

Posted by Mike Fast
For those of you who wish you could be in Cleveland for SABR 38, here's the next best thing, a three-part (so far) recap by Cecilia Tan: Day One, Day Two (Part 1), Day Two (Part 2).

Other good chroniclers of the convention include Ryan Armbrust: Day One (Part 1), (Part 2), (Part 3), (Part 4), and Day Two (Part 1), (Part 2), (Part 3), as well as Bob Timmermann: Day One and Day Two, and Craig Calcaterra: Day One and Day Two.

How Not to Fix Maple

Posted by Matthew Carruth
Wow, what an underhanded suggestion from the maple bat industry on how to stop the epidemic of broken bats.

Preempting the Tide on Ichiro

Posted by Matthew Carruth
It's June and Ichiro is still hitting under .300 on the year. Time for the annual crop of Ichiro is finished articles. Except they've always been wrong. One of these days they won't be, but it strikes me, and Jeff Sullivan of Lookout Landing, that when that day comes, we'll be able to spot it in underlying numbers. 2008 Ichiro looks the same as 207 Ichiro except for BABIP.

Bonds

Posted by Matthew Carruth
Sabernomics thinks it worthwhile for the Braves to go after Barry Bonds if he truly is available for the league minimum.

As does Pinstripe Alley for the Yanks.

As does Joe Posnanski for the Royals.

AL superiority

Posted by Bryan Tsao
Jacob Jackson breaks down the AL's dominance over the NL over at Athletics Nation. At this point, there's very little doubt in my mind that AL teams just have more talent than NL teams.

Who said I could spell?

Posted by Josh Kalk
In my article on Tuesday I horrible misspelled Zack Greinke's name throughout the entire article. In my defense I grabbed the spelling from another website but failed to check it against my own player card which had the correct spelling. This is inexcusable by me and won't happen again. Sorry for the confusion and thanks to a reader for pointing the error out.

If you haven't checked out MLB's gameday yet today go over there and take a look. Some incredible new features have been added. Great work MLBAM!

Cardinals pine for pitching

Posted by Bryan Tsao
Larry over at Viva El Birdos breaks down some of the Cardinals' trade targets.

Beckham debuting for Rays rookie league team

Posted by Bryan Tsao
Tampa Bay Rays first overall pick Tim Beckham will be making his pro debut with Princeton, the Rays rookie league team. (Hat tip to Rays Index.

Twins on fire

Posted by Bryan Tsao
I hadn't realized the Twins were so hot, winning eight straight and 10 of their last 11 games while posting a team OPS of over .800. Jesse at Twinkie Town breaks down the team's offense during the run.

International signing period

Posted by Dave Studeman
Saber Scouting has the scoop on the international signing period, which starts in a week.

Joe covers Joe

Posted by Dave Studeman
Joe Posnanski talks about Joe Morgan and the latest sabermetric outrage against him (not to mention Jon Miller's weird pronunciation of OPS). Joe Morgan has never annoyed me the way he annoys a lot of other baseball analytic types, and Joe P. seems to agree with me. What's more, he explains why in a way I never could. This is why his blog, and book, are must reading.
