The Cliff Floyd Factor

Posted by Dave Studeman
Nice article outlining the impact Cliff Floyd has had on teams. I've always liked Floyd, and it's nice to see him get credit for something beyond his on-field accomplishments. But is the jab at Bill James really necessary? Obviously, this writer hasn't read much of Bill James' work. If he had, he'd realize that James agrees that some things, like team chemistry, are real but unquantifiable.

The Blair Pitch Project

Posted by Dave Studeman
Has Roy Halladay been getting the benefit of the calls this year? Jon Hale takes a look and finds that yes, he has.

Hot Zones

Posted by Dave Studeman
Dan Brooks paints some outstanding strike zone pictures, using the Pitch f/x data. Personally, I find these types of graphs much easier to read than the ones with all the dots. Of course, you can only create something like this if you have lots of pitches in your database. (Hat tip, Tango)

UZR Update

Posted by Matthew Carruth
MGL has a look at the UZR data from 2008 so far and how it compares to his pre-season predictions. He also gives a leaderboard of best and worst performances by position, but pay attention to sample size issues. Defense needs at least twice as much sample as offense before it becomes as meaningful so think of 60 games worth of defensive play as just one month of offensive stats.

Cardinal Pitching Injuries

Posted by Matthew Carruth
Larry Boros laments injuries to two Cardinal starters and what might be done to juggle the rotation around them.

Joe Crede’s Wild Week

Posted by Matthew Carruth
Joe Crede posts a .667/.705/1.800 line over a four game stretch and manages to raise his overall line by .030/.027/.100 a remarkable feat given that it is already June and this was only four games.

Mark Prior’s Other Injury

Posted by Matthew Carruth
Turns out Mark Prior had a second injury to his right shoulder that was hiding. Harry Pavlidis wonders if that injury might have been around since 2003.

Uggla’s 40-40 Club

Posted by Matthew Carruth
Dan Uggla is on pace to become only the second keystoner in baseball history, Rogers Hornsby being the other, to notch 40+ doubles and 40+ home runs in the same season.
