Thursday, July 31, 2008Will Manny make the Marlins worse?Posted by Dave StudemanThat's the question Dave Cameron asks and answers. According to Dave, Ramirez is no better than Jeremy Heremida when you factor in both fielding and batting. Tuesday, July 29, 2008Is Teixeira really an upgrade for the Angels?Posted by Sal BaxamusaMarcel thinks so. The rest of the year projection for Teixeira is .287/.379/.521. Casey Kotchman, traded to the Braves for Tex, is at .281/.348/.438. That's over 100 points of OPS. Both are supposed to be good fielders, so we'll call that a wash. But since the Angels have the AL West all but wrapped up, so this is an upgrade for the postseason. Long-term, it's hard to call this a win for the Angels, but if Tex has some postseason heroics, all will be forgiven. Tribe trade outlookPosted by Dave StudemanThe Indians' remaining trade options are summed up nicely by Let's Go Tribe, in the last of a series called Trade Everyone. Bottom line: only Paul Byrd is left as trade bait, but there may be an option behind the plate. Monday, July 28, 2008THT helps BannyPosted by Dave StudemanAccording to this piece by Joe Posnanski, Brian Bannister is looking to THT's stats for a little insight and help. "Look at my xFIP," he is saying as he pulls out a few pages he printed off the Internet site, "The Hardball Times." He points out his xFIP — an advanced pitching statistic that stands for "Expected Fielding Independent Pitching." We're happy to provide some solace, Brian. Hang in there. (Hat tip: Tango) Xavier Nady’s 2008Posted by Matthew CarruthBeyond the Box Score examines Xavier Nady's 2008 campaign to date to try and find the source of his improvement. What the Mets NeedPosted by Matthew CarruthAmazin Avenue charts out the positions of need for the Mets at the trade deadline. Sunday, July 27, 2008Minors to MajorsPosted by Dave StudemanMGL has analyzed the correlation between minor league and major league performances in consecutive years and draws comparisons to the same results for major leaguers only. The minor league stats are converted to major league equivalents for the analysis. The bottom line is that minor league stats aren't as strongly correlated with the next year as major league stats, but the correlation is still pretty strong. For major leaguers, a typical year-to-year correlation for basic battings ratios (OBP, SLG) is around .5 or .6. For minor leaguers promoted to the majors, it's around .3 or .4. A question in my mind is whether selection bias is inflating the minors-to-majors correlations. Watch Out for the RockiesPosted by Dave StudemanDavid Pinto notes that the Rockies have allowed three runs or less in 14 of their last 22 games and are now just six games out of the lead. Given their rough start, it's crazy to think that the Rox have a shot at the division lead, but that's the NL West for you. Saturday, July 26, 2008More Yankees/Pirates Trade ReactionPosted by Alex EisenbergBen K from River Ave. Blues provides his take on the Yanks/Pirates deal, while Charlie from Bucs Dugout is disappointed after hearing the deal was restructured. Nady MuchoPosted by Dave StudemanOver at Bronx Banter, Cliff Corcoran reviews the good and the bad of the Pirate/Yankee trade, from the Yankees' point of view, including the opinion that the Yankees just don't need Marte. From the Pirate fans' perspective, Pat Lackey of What have you gone, Andy Van Slyke hates it, and so do his readers. Friday, July 25, 2008Hall of Fame shutoutPosted by Dave StudemanHall of Fame ceremonies will be held this weekend, when Goose Gossage, Bowie Kuhn, Walter O'Malley, Barney Dreyfuss, Billy Southworth and Dick Williams are inducted into the Hall. With such a diverse group of individuals entering the Hall, it's a good time to once again ask why Marvin Miller isn't there, too. Interview Pitchf/x guru, Josh KalkPosted by Dave StudemanOur own Josh Kalk is interviewed by NoMaas. Lots of good detail regarding the PITCHf/x system here. Apparently, Josh is a "guru" of PITCHf/x. Cool! Thursday, July 24, 2008Win Shares through July 23Posted by Dave StudemanI updated our Win Shares stats through yesterday's games. Over the past two weeks, six players racked up three Win Shares: Melvin Mora, Carlos Delgado, Troy Glaus, Adam Dunn, Jhonny Peralta, Jim Thome and Ryan Braun. Looks like some sluggers are starting to heat up. RZR AveragesPosted by Dave StudemanWe sometimes receive requests for the average Relative Zone Ratings per position. We hope to eventually have those available on a daily basis, but here are the averages through yesterday's games in the meantime: POS BIZ Plays RZR OOZ 1B 4,023 3,027 .752 885 2B 8,080 6,624 .820 686 3B 6,669 4,656 .698 1,055 SS 8,019 6,679 .833 1,038 LF 5,305 4,691 .884 1,142 CF 6,782 6,215 .916 1,671 RF 5,577 5,026 .901 1,264 Wednesday, July 23, 2008Fun with THT statsPosted by David GasskoQuick quiz: Who leads the major leagues in innings pitched and xFIP?
