Waiting for Liriano

As we continue our journey around the MLB divisions, I look up to find that the Twins are second place in the AL Central (behind the White Sox!) despite not getting anything from Francisco Liriano so far. Well, don't forget about him because he's apparently showing some signs of life at Triple-A. I wouldn't be surprised if he came up in August and made an impact on the pennant race, assuming the Twins are still in it.

Braves throwing in the towel

It's definitely put up or shut up time around the divisions in baseball. Craig Calcaterra seems to think that the Braves are packing it in.

“A magnet for suffering”

It's a tough time to be a Mets fan right now. I definitely thought they'd be one of the best teams in the NL this season, so watching them muddle through the early part of the season has been somewhat surprising. Still, they are only 4.5 games out of first, which means they are not quite out of it yet. Nonetheless, as an A's fan who just suffered through a series in which my team's bullpen coughed up two late-inning leads against our division rival, I can sympathize with Eric when he writes the following:
What the hell was that crap about? I don't know why I bother sometimes, because staying up late to watch this team give it up like that as often as they do really takes a lot out of me. This loss was such a wretched, phenomenal failure, but none of us can say that we didn't expect the game to end poorly, at least a little bit. This team seems to be a magnet for suffering, and if there's a reasonable way to lose a game they can usually find it.

Break but not movement?

Jon Hale has a very nice post on the difference between movement and break (at least, in PITCHf/x terms) and what it means for B.J. Ryan's fastball.
